The X-Men and Supergirl

 

The continuing X-Men cast announcements have me wondering what Marvel has planned for this new film iteration of the team.  I had assumed that Marvel would go back to the beginning, with a true classic first class roster.  But with characters like Rogue and Emma Frost mixed in, that doesn't seem to be the case.  It will be interesting to see what the final line up looks like. 

Rogue and Power Girl

 

I'm not sure why the DC movies keep trying to give us new badass, no-nonsense Supergirl variants when there's already a perfectly good one to use - Power Girl.  She gets no love outside of the comics for some reason.  Sure, we've seen Rogue on the big screen before, but she wasn't exactly the sassy Southern fireball we know from the comics - let's hope her next onscreen iteration gets her personality correct.

Firestorm and The X-Men

 

Paul Smith's run on Uncanny X-Men was my introduction to his amazing artwork.  I loved his take on the characters, everyone had a sleek modern look while honoring the designs of previous artists on the title. I made sure to follow smith's career since then to masterpieces like Leave it to Chance and The Golden Age.  I was lucky enough to pick up a few sketches by Smith many years back:

The X-Men and Captain Comet

 

With the casting for Kamala Khan set, The MCU seems ready to dive into the world of Inhumans.  The Eternals is on the horizon as well, yet another secret race of super powered individuals on Earth.  This is all very cool, but does pose a problem for when Marvel wants to introduce the X-Men.  Will they be able to differentiate mutants from all of the other groups of superheroes out there?  Why would they be shunned by a world that is already so used to metahumans?

Ambush Bug in The Marvel Universe

Maybe even more than the title character herself, I am looking forward to The Skrulls being introduced in Captain Marvel.  They are probably my favorite evil alien race in comics and it will be cool to see what shapeshifting shenanigans they get up to.  I'm wondering if any already established MCU characters will be revealed to have been sleeper Skrulls all along? 

Rogue and The Flash

I was thinking that if the Gambit movie ever got off the ground, we might get a chance to see a more comics-accurate version of Rogue on the big screen.  Alas, with all the starts and stops that project has had, not to mention Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox' film properties, it looks like the film will never be made.  It will probably be some years before Marvel gets their own version of the X-Men up and running, and even longer before Rogue becomes part of the mix.

Jade & Obsidian and Rogue

Continued from yesterday's cover, we now see who it was that The Sentinels were after - did any of you guess correctly? 

Jade and Obsidian have been missing in action for a while now.  Once the classic Justice Society of America was taken off the table, there was no longer a place for their children as well.  DC seems to be ready to bring the JSA back though, and hopefully these two won't be too far behind.

Power Girl and Rogue

One  X-Men character that I am really looking forward to having a Marvel cinematic makeover is Rogue.  Anna Paquin's version was more of a Rogue/Kitty Pryde hybrid and, other than her power set, never reminded me much of the comic book character.  I'd love to see the sassy Southern villain gone good finally get her live-action due.

Superman and Rogue

Now that the X-Men films have had a soft reboot, I wonder if we will see a more comics-accurate verion of Rogue sometime down the line.  The Anna Paquin version was kind of a Rogue/Kitty Pride hybrid and didn't have a lot in common with her comic counterpart other than her mutant abilities.  I'd like to see the reformed villain verion of the character that was full of confidence and attitude.  Maybe if the Gambit film ever gets off the ground, she will show up there.

Justice League of America Vs. the Marvel Universe!

I loved the Tabloid-Sized comics that Marvel and DC used to put out when I was a kid.  We had a whole bunch - Secret Origins of Super-Villains, The Fantastic Four, Superman Vs. Shazam, Stories from the Bible, Tarzan, Dick Tracy, Batman's Villains, Marvel Holiday Specials, and more.  I have fond memories of lying down on the living room floor and seeing my favorite heroes in "big screen" action.

So, you see the line up here - who ultimately wins? I see Captain Britain, Black Bolt, Rogue and Iron Man winning for Marvel, The Atom, Superman, Batman, Flash and Wonder Woman winning for the JLA with Captain Marvel Vs. The Thing being a draw, so... advantage JLA!  I tried to make it close, though, so your opinion may vary.

Justice Society of America and The X-Men

I love to see George Perez artwork on just abou anything, but where I feel he shines the most is on team comics.  He has the ability to include multiple characters in his storytelling without the artwork. ever looking too crowded through his deft use of composition and multi-paneled pages.  Plus, his characters all have very individualized faces and body types, rather than stock hero and heroine forms, which really enhances my enjoyment of a comic with a large roster.

Batgirl and Rogue

I watched the trailer for the extended cut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and there is a quick moment with Jena Malone, who was cut from the film.  Some had speculated she was playing Barbara Gordon, but from her appearance, I'm not so sure about that.  If there's no place for Barbara Gording in the films, perhaps Batgirl could show up on TV's Supergirl.  That's a World's Finest team that might actually crack a smile once in a while!

Supergirl Vs. Rogue

I have already indicated that Supergirl and Ms. Marvel are sisters in the STF-verse in a few past covers, so this is a confrontation that was bound to happen sooner or later.

Supergirl is the latest in the ongoing list of upcoming TV series.  This one I have to admit I didn't see coming.  I wonder if they will be connecting it to the big screen adventures of her famous cousin?  Hopefully they will find the right balance of action and drama.

Batman and Rogue

Rogue is a great idea for a mutant.  Her ability to absorb other characters' powers means she can go up against all types of opponents and the range of action that can be depicted is limitless.  I think the permanent strength and flight that she acquired make her a bit too powerful though, and I feel she is more compelling with only the temporary absorption abilities.  I'd like to see a more faithful version of Rogue in a future X-Men film. While I enjoyed Anna Paquin's performance in the earlier  X-films, it never felt like the comic book version to me.   Her character was sort of a hybrid between Rogue and Kitty Pryde - not only did we lose a lot of interesting back story Rogue had in the comics, she also seemed redundant when the actual Kitty was introduced.
