Vixen and Hercules in: "Stone Love!"

 

For this, the 12th appearance of Hercules and Vixen together, it looks as though they have run afoul of The Grey Gargoyle.  That guy used to really creep me out when I was a kid.  Being turned to stone seemed like a fate worse than death.  At least it was eventually reversible, unlike the same effect from the Greek god Medusa.

There are a bunch of different artists on this one.  Al Pratt here is by Jerry Ordway & Mike Machlan - Ordway's renditions of the JSA members are always a treat to see, as is his art on anything.  Here's a couple more pieces of his original art that I was lucky enough to pick up several years back (from Green Lantern: Secret Files and Zero Hour):

The Grey Gargoyle was a cool villain, if only because imagining being turned to stone was a frightening prospect to me as a young comics reader.   I did have one question about his costume, though.  It was cool that he appeared to be made of or at least covered with stone, but the cape confused me.  It appeared to fold and flow like normal cloth.  It seemed to me that it should have been at least somewhat rigid (or not included at all).
