Captain Marvel and King Kong

 

CGI is the special effects language of movies these days, but classics like the original King Kong and The Adventures of Captain Marvel boasted some very impressive practical effects for their time.  I'm sure young audiences thrilled to the wonders before them.  The only thing cooler would have been to combine the two properties.

Iron Man and King Kong

 

We may see them from time to time, but for the most part, gorgeously painted movie posters are a thing of the past.  It's too bad, some of them were truly iconic.  Just like album covers, somewhere along the line, artistry took a back seat to more commercial advertising.

Superman Meets King Kong

 

I enjoyed making a photo cover featuring Superman meeting King Kong (along with The Phantom) back in STF #3306,STF #3306, but I always regretted not using the classic Kong from the original 1933 film.  This cover finally scratches that itch for me.  I added in a suitable opponent for our headlining characters to face off with.

Indiana Jones meets King Kong

 

There's been a bootleg trailer for the new Indiana Jones movie floating around, but I'll wait for an official clean copy is released to watch it.  Still, it's receiving positive praise  and Harrison Ford's emotional speech to the audience at D23 about how proud he is of it have me cautiously optimistic.  The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull may not have been well received, but hopefully this final installment will give Indy the proper sendoff that he deserves.

God zilla Vs. Kong was pretty much what I expected it would be.  The plot didn't make a lot of sense  and the humans were constantly making silly decisions - but the special effects and monster battles were awesome to behold!  I've watched it twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times.  I am glad to hear that a follow up is in the works, this time focusing on Son of Kong.  That has some fun possibilities!

Tarzan Vs. King Kong

This is yet another suggestion from comics historian and Patron of this blog, Marc Tyler Nobleman that had me smacking my forehead because I had never thought of it before.  Imagine a movie featuring the Lord of the Jungle having to deal with the King of all Beasts?  It pretty much writes itself in my mind's eye.  Let's bring on Lord Greystoke after Kong finishes up with Godzilla in his next theatrical appearance!

The Thing and King Kong

The 1933 King Kong is just about a perfect classic film. I am a fan of stop-motion animation and the creatures in that film still hold up for me. It's amazing what they were able to achieve with such old school special effects. The 70's version is pretty hokey when I watch it now, but I still have a soft spot for it, since I first watched it by sneaking into my brother's bedroom well past my bedtime when I was a little kid. I even had the movie poster in my room, I loved it so much. I was very much looking forward to Peter Jackson's version, but I must admit that that movie is much longer than it needs to be. It felt very padded out to me with some unnecessary subplots. The last 90 minutes are a lot of fun though and the effects, especially on Kong and the old style New York, are quite impressive. Still, nothing holds a candle to the original film - I can't imagine what it must have been like to be a kid watching that in the theater when it was originally released.
