Harvey Birdman and Two-Face

 

Two attorneys, both named Harvey but each operating with their own set of rules - It was only a matter of time before they crossed paths.

Birdman met the Silver Age Hawkman in STF #1345, and previously shared an adventure with the Golden Age Hawkman in STF #1532.  When I saw the chance to use all Jerry Ordway artwork, I figured it was time to feature a third outing with the winged heroes fighting side by side.

Harvey Birdman met up with plenty of other heroes on his late night show.  It's too bad that Marvel characters were off limits, because having Daredevil show up would have seemed natural.  Oh well, that's what this blog is for, presenting the team ups that should have happened already!

Dial H for Hanna-Barbera

 

At a time when all I knew where heroes from Marvel and DC comics, I was happy to find Hanna-Barbera's World of Super-Adventure with it's impressive line up of cartoon stars. Space Ghost and The Herculoids were my favorites, but I liked all of the features.  Alex Toth certainly knew how to design a show!

I used to like the Marvel Team-Up annuals that would have a truly random assemblage of heroes gather together for an adventure.  This is my take on that concept.  I can see The Ringmaster in the middle of his latest plot, unaware that the audience includes a handful that are ready to fight back.

Wing Command

 

There was a discussion in a comments section a while back about creating an all-winged team.  I originally thought it would be tough to do given the space that winged characters generally take up on a cover, especially with all the different candidates for such a team. I figured I would try the concept but limit it to heroes that have feathered wings, and that seemed to be more manageable.

Super Friends and Birdman

 

Wendy and Marvin didn't do much for me as a kid watching The Super Friends.  I know the idea was for me to see what it was like for someone closer to my age to hang out with the World's Greatest Super-Heroes, but in my imagination, I wanted to actually be a hero, not just a bystander.  The Donnie and Marie-inspired Wonder Twins were a better solution, since they actually had powers and could participate in the action.  Still, like the first two companions, they had no comic book counterparts, so I never got very attached to them. 

The Galaxy Trio and The Fantastic Four (And More!)

 

Ever since I saw Marvel's Fantastic Four share the opening credits for Hanna-Barbera's World of Super Adventure with HB's stable of heroes as a kid, I have wanted to see an honest to goodness meeting between these two comic universes.  Alas, the Hanna-Barbera superhero seem to restrict their crossovers to DC characters these days, but there's no reason we can't imagine what it would be like for the Marvel heroes to get in on the action here at STF: The Lost issues!

The Angel and Birdman

A winged human makes for a pretty impressive visual, which is one reason I didn't think changing Warren Worthington's feathers to metal and skin to blue was necessary to make him look any cooler.  The Apocalypse story line where that happened was fine, I just wish he hadn't kept the new Archangel look for so long.  I think he has the feathers back these days, but still has the blue skin.

Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law made me laugh a lot - but I have to admit that I am happy that a more serious version of the character is back in Future Quest.  I took the cartoons very seriously when I saw them as a kid, so I have always thought of Birdman as a hero first and foremost.

It's going to be cool to see Hawkman and Hawkgirl in regular action once DC's Legends of Tomorrow gets started.  I like that they are exploring the reincarnation aspects of the characters, as that presents a lot of story possibilities.  The costumes look pretty good as well, although I agree with many that Hawkman's helmet needs tweaking.  By mirroring Hawkgirl's helmet he looks more like Wolverine than the winged warrior.

I think that is a superhero is going to have an animal mascot, a bird is the best way to go.  They're great for providing reconnaissance or passing on information. I also like the idea of heroes having a psychic bond with their avian companions, so that they can see what the bird sees as it flies ahead of them.  It might be fun to get a bunch of these bird-loving heroes for an action packed tale.

I remembered Birdman from Hanna-Barbara's World of Super Adventure when I was a kid but had not paid attention to him for years.  Decades later, I stumbled onto Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block.  I have to admit that some of the episodes had me laughing out loud, especially when Scooby and Shaggy were suspected of drug use, Apache Chief loses his growing ability following being scalded with hit coffee, and of course Fred Flintstone as the Yabba-Dabba-Don.  The show has gotten increasingly more bizarre and the more recent stows seem to be geared towards the under the influence college crowd, but that first season was a hoot.
