Spy Smasher Vs. James Bond

 

I guess it was only a matter of time before the Smasher faced off against the most famous spy of them all.  This confrontation is bound to leave him shaken, if not stirred.

This is a pairing that I have meant to get to for a while.  There was a bit of prep work required before I could add in Spy Smasher, though - here's a look at the behind the scenes progress:

I remember my first encounter with Spy Smasher in the pages of a Justice League of America crossover.  I didn't understand why this guy wasn't a bigger deal.  He had a neat costume, great name, and cool mission statement.  I even copied him for my stable of made up heroes that I liked to draw - I named my guy Spy Fighter.

One of the first comics I remember reading was an issue of Justice League that features a JLA/JSA/Earth "S" crossover, Spy Smasher was  just one face in the crowd but he must have made an impression on me.  When I would play "superhero" I would often imagine myself as Spy Smasher in addition to some of the more traditional heroes like Captain America ar Batman.

I remember thinking that Spy Smasher was cool when I was introduced to him in the pages of a JLA/JSA crossover that featured the "Earth-S" heroes.  At the time I figured that he was just another c-list Fawcett character but it turns out that he had quite a presence back in his day with plenty of solo adventures and even a live action movie serial adaptation.  They got the costume perfectly right in that serial, too - which is more than Batman or Captain America could say.
