Samurai Jack and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

 

I was happy to hear that Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky will be be bringing my on of my all time favorite cartoons, Primal, back for a third season.  The announcement was a big surprise since season two was years ago, and seemed to wrap up - but I love the new angle that's been announced going forward (which I would mention but it kind of spoils the end of season 2).

I mean, they all make New York City their home base of operations, it would only be a matter of time before they ran into each other.  Not that NYC is where this particular story takes place!

I thought that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was a fun movie. The gritty animation style worked well and reminded me of some of the earlier comics that featured the group of pizza-loving brothers.  I also liked how they were presented as younger, truly teenagers for once. The April O'Neill redesign really didn't work for me though, that seemed to be change for change sake.  Still, It's a fun, fast paced adventure that is well worth watching for fans of the characters.

Turtles may have a reputation for being slow, but I would say that all that are pictured here buck that trend.  Between the super speed, martial arts action and a kaiju menace, there would be more than enough fast paced excitement in this issue.

Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (The Movie!)

 

When Ben W mentioned in a recent comment section that there should have been a cinematic meeting between these two properties since their movies came out so close together, I had to agree it was an excellent point.  I highly recommend the Batman/TMNT animated move that came out.  It's an excellent crossover and the closing credits are amazing, with lots of mock covers like I make here on the blog.

Blue Beetle & Booster Gold and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

 

I'm not sure what took so long, but it looks like Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are finally getting a team up comic together - Blue & Gold.  Is that a sign that DC and Warner Bros. have confidence in the heroic yet humorous duo?  A movie featuring the two was floated years ago, but nothing seemed to come of it.  Now there's a solo Blue Beetle movie in the works, but that looks to focus on Jaime Reyes.  Will Booster and Ted find a way into that project or elsewhere?  We will just have to wait and see.

The New Teen Titans and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Titans series looked like a mixed bag to me, with some dodgy costumes, limited use of powers and overly dark tone outshadowing whatever cool moments it may deliver, but opinions seemed to improve as the show went on.  So I'll put the question out to any of you who have watched it - was it a success for you?  Did it capture the feel for the comics and characters, or did it miss the mark?

Kang Vs. Krang Vs. Kang!

The yearly Treehouse Of Horror episodes of The Simpsons are among my favorites.  The writers really seem to have fun with them.  Plus, there's usually an appearance by the aliens Kang and Kodos.  I was surprised to find out that Kodos was female when Kang referred to her as "my sister" at one point (or was that the other way around?)

Daredevil and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Batman is currently crossing over for real with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in the comics, which is pretty cool - but I have to say that I am surprised they are sharing an adventure with The Dark Knight before The Man Without Fear.  The Turtles came about as a response to the popularity of comics like Frank Miller's Daredevil run, and it seems to me that a story featuring them together would be a natural.  I wondered why it's never happened?

Continued from yesterday's cover, now we know what the Doctors had to journey underground for.  TMNT seems to be enjoying somewhat of a revival due to the latest movie franchise.  I haven't checked out the first one yet - it looked a bit too CGI heavy and I've been burned by Michael Bay movies before.  It did well in the theaters though and  I do like the idea of Stephen Amell as Casey Jones for the sequel, so maybe I wuill give it a shot.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Vs. Deadpool and Bane

Despite the fact that word of mouth was less than stellar, the newest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film seemed to do well at the box office, so audiences can count on another installment of the Michael Bay-produced franchise.  The somewhat creepy design of the leads was a turn-off for me, so I decided to make this one a rental. For me, the CGI animated TMNT is still the best the Turtles have looked onscreen.

Other than a few pre-CGI behind the scenes shots, I have seen and read very little of the upcoming Michael Bay-produced theatrical reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  I am very curious as to haw this film will turn out.  Bay is known for his over-excesses, but his films usually at least look slick and cool.  The key is to give him a decent script to work with.  Director Jonathan Liebesman previous efforts include Battle: Los Angeles and Wrath of the Titans, two films that despite their spectacle did not do much for me.  Hopefully his take on the TMNT franchise works a bit better.

The Emerald Elite

I've had a few request for a color-themed team, and I felt that green was the best way to go.  There are a lot of green-skinned heroes out there, and I think the reason for that probably comes down to aesthetics - they just looks so cool!  At any rate, I'd love to see how the above group of heroes would interact with one another, given their varied personalities.  They certainly would not be lacking in power, that's for sure.

Iron Fist and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I quite liked the TMNT CGI film from a few years ago and was sorry to hear that there would not be a sequel.  The Turtles seem to be headed for the big screen again, this time under the control of Michael Bay, with Megan Fox as April O'Neil.  I have read that Bay will be straying from the comics, giving the Turtles a more alien related origin.  I  have my doubts but I will try and reserve judgement until I see some actual footage.

The Thing and The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I was a little too old to get into The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when it first came out as a cartoon, but I did get a kick out of the couple of black and white comics that I read where they made their debut. Later, I saw the first live action movie and I have to confess that it is a guilty pleasure for me. I feel no guilt, however, regarding my admiration for TMNT, their CGI animated movie. I though that was very well done and I absolutely loved the look of the film, particularly the brother vs. brother battle in the rain. That movie made me really want to see other comic book properties animated in the same manner, and sadly we haven't seen any since. It's too bad because it would be a great format to adapt a comic book without having to worry so much about how costumes translate to screen and the cost of major SFX scenes. I love watching live action superhero fare, but I definitely think is would be cool to see more CGI comic book films.
