Oh, for the times these memories bring back. Slim Summers with the Prof, Hank doing a single arm handstand, Warren floating in one spot ...and the rest here on Gilli.. whoops, wrong show. And Chuck's FBI contact was one of the few who knew & trusted him.
OMAC has become a supporting character in his own book thanks to Batman using Brother Eye as an emergency weapon in case of good guys turning bad among the super heroes. It was weird, even for Batman.
@Tobor: I blame that latter plot gimmick on Frank Miller. He's the one who made grim-and-gritty the new rule rather than a rare exception!
As for today's cover? I love it! It not only blends the Kirby artwork just as seamlessly as STF #3085. It also ties in nicely with STF #'s 4368 and 4371.
Think about it!
The mutant war hinted at in OMAC's previous team-up with the X-men led to the Great Disaster. Which, in turn, led to the rise of the Mega-cities and the judges who defend them. Judge Dredd was trying to stop a time-traveling HTD from going back into the past and averting the Great Disaster.* But, Howard was merely being a decoy on behalf of OMAC!
Why all the fuss? To prevent Kamandi from retrieving the Ultimate Nullifier, from the Cavern of Lost Souls, and using it on Galactus (who wouldn't be the only one ultimately nullified).
*Howard had probably traveled to Earth-AD because it was the one time and place where an anthropomorphic duck could blend in without being considered a mutant freak by us hairless apes.
Crap! That should've read "STF...#4374."
Sorry, Ross. :-(
This is kind of a case where art imitates life... or, more accurately, where art about art imitates the art that the first art is about. As I recall, a few years ago went so far off the rails that someone brought in their past selves to fix things; this looks like it could be something similar.
Jack King Kirby!! And a double helping thanks to the link to their previous team up. I loved them both! Great memories, especially of his X-Men run.
Is there a special corner of the STF universe that is just for Kirby-Kirby pairings? Maybe policed by Thor - but ruled by Doctor Doom (or maybe behind the metal mask it's really Doctor Ross?)
I'd love to see more of it.
I wonder how Jack Kirby would have drawn "Agents of the Abyss (STF #631) vs. The Death-dealer from the Dead Sea (STF #3710)."
I mean, with Abe Sapien as the connecting link, what would be the difficulty (other than availability of matchable images)
