Brenda Starr and J. Jonah Jameson

Brenda Starr, Reporter was not the typical type of comic strip that I liked growing up - I was more into action heroes and humor strips.  Still, the illustration was by the great Ramona Fradon, so I found myself following the daily adventures.  Fradon recently passed away, but she left us decades upon decades of amazing artwork - she will always be remembered.

Oh, I can just see her having deduced that Peter and Spidey are one-and-the-same and divulging it to JJJ...for a price. But, of course, this was all an elaborate revenge plot by one of the webhead's multitudinous foes. William "Mindworm" Turner as cloned by the Jackal.
Or, perhaps, Brainwave telepathically controlling her for the benefit of Doc Doom.* Or maybe even a cross-dressing Chameleon!

*Something to do with that Marko-Latverian War---Cary.

I think someone is just trying to bust up the Newshounds one at a time. First, by outing Clark Kent as Superman. Now, this. The question is; who's that patiently sly?---the real Anonymous.

@ my namesakes: Loki might be that sly. After all, both Kermit and Superman apparently helped Throg revert to Thor at some point (after STF #'s 557 and 927). So, to keep the Newshounds from investigating who really betrayed Superman (@ STF #4383), Loki temporarily becomes a BS impersonator!

The real question being...which Newshound gets betrayed next?

I'd prefer it to be April O'Neil. If only to bring together the TMNT and Super-Turtle!

BTW, do you like the new Alley Oop?

Ah ha! Just the reporter to drive J.J.J. crazy. It's the "ear to the ground" reporters like Starr who always get to the truth. Knowing what I know about Jameson, the question is: will he believe her?

I'm not really familiar with Brenda, but this does seem to be too much of a coincidence that she started to turn on Clark in #1770 and now is turning on Peter. And I'll second Anon@7:23's suggestion that April is next; she does seem to be the next one with a big secret. Is Brenda really that mercenary, or could a shapeshifter (like Loki, yes, or maybe Mystique, the Chameleon, or Clayface) be taking her place?

PS: Speaking of shapeshifters, how about a team-up of Morph (of the Exiles) and Chameleon Boy?

I remember Ramona on Aquaman in Adventure. A quiet strength was always in her work.
Based on all the postings today, at the very least, Ross do you have an group of identity shifters? If not, how about Second Lookers!...? Beteen the skrulls, and all the people who can change their identities as listed in the earlier postings today, wouldn't that be a group that were ALWAYS hiding their true intentions as they did anything else?
i could see them taking their oath now..."I swear to keep the waters muddy and to make anybody as confused as possible!"

Why not just simply call them "The Confusables"?

Brenda always found the story that could be a headline,
Jonah used to be a reporter and would have been on the streets at the same time as her, but not in the same league.
how quickly would the Green Goblin be on her trail and her on his…. i imagine that she thinks that the photo is a fake and would get Jonah to fund her investigation… - if they are a group of shapeshifters how would you know ?

Now there is a pair worth the title Icy Hot

JJJ should be careful about making any non-professional moves against her. Her husband, Basil St. John, is sure to be keeping an eye on her.

Excellent choice.

Anon1049 just gave me a good idea. How about Nick Fury, Basil St. John, Magic Agent John Force, and Space Angel form a group of eye patch-wearing crime fighters? You could call them...

"The Eye Team!"

i can't wait to see their first pupil.

@Tobor: (lol) GOOD ONE!!!

BTW, the newspaper that Brenda Starr worked for was the Central City Flash. If that doesn't suggest another cover...

How about Brenda Starr and Jimmy Olsen?

Carycomic said...

@Richard S: A ginger-haired Dynamic Duo if ever there was one.

or Brenda Starr and Mary Jane Watson.. "Fire-haired Furies!"

@Simreeve: Guest-starring a time-displaced Caucasian teenager who was raised by 19th century Blackfeet?

When she gets fired from that job, will she apply at the Daily Planet?

Anonymous said...

@Jim Burrows: well, with both Clark Kent and Superman out of the picture,* there's certainly an opening for a new "Starr" reporter, there!

*See STF #'s 1770 and 4383, respectively.

Brenda looks so much like Lana "Insect Queen" Lang.

I didn't know of Ramona's passing until I saw this post today. May she rest in peace.

I loved her work on Super Friends (& had every issue with her artwork). Also she was great on Plastic Man in the 70s & co-created Metamorpho.
