M.A.N.T.I.S. and The Flash

M.A.N.T.I.S. was a TV series ahead of it's time.  The Carl Lumbly-starring tale of a high tech superhero hit the airwaves just a few years before the new era of live action comic book shows really got into full swing.  I watched every episode of its single season though, and I remember it getting really good by the end and disappointed that there would not be more.  Maybe if it came out a decade later it would have had a longer run.

I, too, enjoyed the series from the far-different pilot to the semi-apocalyptic final episode. I remember that the pilot was set in racially polarized Ocean City, California (a fictional setting just as racially polarized as equally fictional Freeland, Georgia). And the hint that some evil plutocratic corporation was secretly behind all the organized crime in the city was, then, a new concept in adventure shows. But, unsettlingly plausible, during the post-Reaganomic years.

My biggest regret about the series being a one-season wonder is that the loyal viewers never got their questions answered as to why Carl Lumbly's character moved to the Pacific Northwest. Or who the sniper was who had fired the crippling shot. Or who exactly he was working for!

Fantastic cover Ross. Flash was a favorite, but I didn't like the way the show was done. It felt too cheap, like the special effects were suppose to cary everything.
I'm almost a huge fan of the current Flash series. My issue with it is the use of Flashpoint. Why? In the first season when Eobard Thawne is killing Wells, he says that in his history everything went well for Wells. Eobard created his own Flashpoint by killing Barry's mom and then replacing Wells at S.T.A.R. labs.

After Barry's Flashpoint, he came home to find history had changed for people he knew but did not affect directly in the change. Cisco's brother dearth, Diggle's child was now a different gender, and so on. Ripple effects at work.
In theory, Eobard's Flashpoint might have changed all of the C.W. world making Oliver Queen an unknowing victim as well as any of the other characters in that superhero group. Ripple effects.
And Eobard seems to have accomplished it without any harm to himself. Too bad Barry couldn't do it also. If Eobard's Flashpoint were to be undone somehow, I wonder how many people would have had their lives changed?

This is very cool! And you know, had these shows lasted, the only thing keeping this event from actually happening would've been that they were on different networks. (Well, also the villain would probably have to be something other than Skynet, of course -- though seeing these two up against some Terminators would be quite a sight to behold!)

And, of course, this wasn't the end of superheroics for Carl Lumbly, who voice the Martian Manhunter for years, played that character's father on Supergirl, and most recently had the role of Isaiah Bradley on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, doing outstanding work in all. Nor for John Wesley Shipp, of course, who not only reprised this role in two Arrowverse events but also has played Jay Garrick on both The Flash and Stargirl.

Speaking of Stargirl, I'm quite positively impressed with the use of Eclipso on that show, and I'd like to see him return here to spark some discussion. He's been kind of a nemesis for the Elongated Man/Moon Knight pairing, but it might be fun to see him up against the Claremont-era X-Men.

I second Bob's motion. :-)

Frankly I though the MANTIS TV movie (by the same guys who made the Flash series for those of you who missed the in-joke) was better than the series. I wish they had stuck with that cast and tone. Plus I like the trench coat and hat hiding the exosuit underneath.

Cool cover! I met Carl Lumbly at a comic convention way back when he was promoting the show. A nice guy.

@ShadowWingTronix: as did I. And, like Carycomic, I like to believe that a second season would've served as a prequel to Season 1. Explaining--among other things--the conspicuous absence of the African exchange students and the sudden partnership with that English guy!

I was unaware of M.A.N.T.I.S. before this.
His suit looks to me as though it had the same manufacturer as those of the criminal 'Reapers' whom Stephanie Brown fought during her time [& comics series] as Batgirl...

How about Stephanie Brown being introduced to Charlie Brown--by Bugs Bunny, no less--as long-lost relatives of each other? If only so Ross could entitle it...SPOILER ALERT!
