This George Perez-designed costume for Zatanna gets a lot of flack, but I have always kind of liked it. Sure, the classic fishnets look is great, but I didn't mind this more superhero-ish outfit for Zatanna, especially since it came at a time when she was serving as a regular member of the Justice League. I don't know how practical it would be for battle, but it looked great to my eyes.

Whoa! Cool cover!
I'm not so sure about the billowy sleeves, but the rest of the costume is not bad. Since she's reverted to the Classic stage fishnet costume, that seems to be a "theme" for Zatanna...
I usually think of this costume when I remember that it was just after Iris died and Barry and Zatanna were kind of flirting...
WOW!!What a cover. Z is from a race of magic based people, taking on a goddess.Epic idea and execution Ross.
There is an issue of JLA where Barry and Z. did more than just flirt. It was totally implied and done off panel.
I'm less than thrilled with the oversized sleeves and the flowing cape, but I still wouldn't mind this for when she does her superhero stuff as long as she still wears the bow tie on stage.
(Yes, it's the bow tie that I love about her traditional outfit, not the fishnets. I'd be just as happy if she wore slacks with it.)
She might be the only character whose work clothes are more flamboyant than her superhero costume. (especially this one)
I just realized Amora backwards is Aroma.
What a great cover and an even greater potential for a heckuva battle. By far my favorite Zatanna outfit. Never was a fan of the fishnets and top hat! Excellent job on this one...
If this is Zatanna at the peak of her powers, then Amora will indeed be lucky if she gets out of this in one piece.
Ross, you've teamed up the Enchantresses from DC and Marvel before.
Have you ever thought of pitting the two Enchantresses against each other?
Also, I see issue 2800 will arrive shortly. Will it be a big Christmas special?
Great pairing and a really good cover. On the Great Zatanna Costume Debate, I'll cast my vote for top hat and fishnets. Really distinctive.
I can just picture the Enchantress' reply in the next panel.
"Mortal wench! Thou knowest not what thou art doing!! Thy headdress is a mind-controlling parasite from The Realm Unspeakable!!!"
@Anon1249: conversely, if the Enchantress disguised herself as top-hat Zatanna when confronting the likes of, say, Superman? She wouldn't even need to kiss him to get him under control! I can just picture the word balloon that Ross would most likely place over Supe's head.
"Must--surrender--without--a fight. Cannot--resist--those fishnet--stockings!"
;-)
The current DC Superhero Girls cartoon has Zatanna wear a variation of this costume in battle and the tux and top hat otherwise.
Another unrelated suggestion: Dr. Fate vs. Dr. Destiny and Dr. Doom
@Anonymous750: the DCSG version of Zatanna I saw had her dressed like J-pop Barbie! But, it was still far better than the costume with the thigh-high boots and ruby headdress shaped like a snail.
ok, Alex, i'll take HOUSE CALLS.
what is: Dr Fate vs Dr Doom for.... control of The House of Secrets.
@Comment Deleted: We already had a pretty perfect (IMHSHO) house call a couple of months ago.
@Bob: Yeah! But, not a three-for-all.
Let's not forget that, prior to this costume, Zatanna was wearing a grey cat suit with a boob window, a cape, and elf boots. This thing:

These days we know enough to appreciate Zatanna's stage magician look, but that sort of thing wasn't superhero-ey enough for the 70s and 80s.
Oh, right. The dominatrix thingie her bio-mom wore.
