Ross, that is simple and effective. Dr. Fate couldn't do it, but Charles could.
You think it's Mid-Nite's boots & tunic that sets the pirate feeling? Still a bit of Gotham by Gaslight to the character's feel.

As to Dr. Mid-nite's costume? I always thought it looked more like a WWI aviator's outfit. I mean, think about it! Most of the Americans who served in the Lafayette Escadrille (and, then later, the U.S. Army Air Corps) were ex-cavalryman. Airplanes in a power dive became the new horses-at-full-gallop for them!
In short; they felt like 20th century knights. So, in a sense, Charles McNider, M.D., could also be called "Dr. Mid-knight."
As Eric Clapton might say:

What are the chances that they're out to prevent the magical equivalent of a shotgun wedding (as hinted at on the "cover" of STF #2720)?

I always feel a certain sense of achievement when one of my ideas makes it to this blog. It's just as good as when someone buys one of my designs on Zazzle or Spoonflower; it's the sense of affirmation that really gets to me. So, thank you, Ross, for liking this idea and making it a (semi-)reality!
I do hope to see these two have further adventures in the future. There just aren't a lot of superheroes who are actual MDs (MacNider's two successors and Harley Quinn being the only other ones I can think of; Doc Samson, as a psychologist, is a PhD). I think it'd be a lot of fun to see them trying to resuscitate someone like Superman, Blue Devil, or Cloak. Or, they could have to do emergency surgery on Galactus!
Regarding Doctor Mid-Nite's costume, I think Tobor (in his first comment) got the pirate idea right: the boots and tunic do give a little of that. The belt is probably another bit in that direction. (And I agree that it's pretty cool-looking; I may just add it to my list of potential cosplays.)
But Tobor's second comment... this is the first I'd heard of the Eagle awards, and I wasn't able to find anything about it -- or even anything that it could be, among all the various things on the 'net called Eagle Awards. Please explain.
To the Anonymous with the Eric Clapton vibe: That song really needs to be written out in full.

The Eagle Award was a series of awards for comic book titles and creators. They were awarded by UK fans voting for work produced during the previous year. Named after the UK's Eagle comic, the awards were launched in 1977 for comics released in 1976. They were last awarded in 2012.
A quick Google search turned up several awards using that name, but all seem to be local awards and none that were comics related.

Hawkman & Hawkgirl have their planet's brain device that allowed them to gain knowledge from whatever planet they were near so they should be considered unofficial medical staff.
Dr. Mid-Nite actually has 7 colors for artists to deal with (8 if you could his human skin color). His lenses on his goggles are usually blue surrounded by a white or silver border & his belt buckle is usually white or a silver color.
Even colorful characters like Halo or the Rainbow Archer have less to deal with.

I get a "Server Not Found" error for http://www.eagleawards.co.uk/nominations/ -- it's basically a dead link. I therefore have no idea what's going on with that.
Ah thought you were referring to something new rather than form a few years back. Alas, no more nominations or mentions that I am aware of.
@Bob Greenwade: actually, Leonard Samson is a practicing psychiatrist. Which means he's also required to hold an M.D. for those occasions when one of his patients must be prescribed drugs.
@Most recent Anon: Hm. I probably should've checked Wikipedia before I made that remark; it agrees with you. Somehow it seemed to me that he was pointed out as a psychologist with the latest STF cover he shared with Harley Quinn.
@Ross: Don't forget my other "two doctors" cover suggestion, with Doctor Who and Star Trek: Voyager! That would give a unique opportunity for the Doctor to meet the Doctor. Maybe as the former show's new season comes on in (I think) January.

@Anonymous: Actually, that one was almost five hundred and fifty issues back
(STF #2221)! "Daddy Issues" was the equally obvious title of the much more recent sequel.
