Sandman and Calvin and Hobbes

 

Dream of the Endless is all about storytelling, the imagination and the subconscious, So I imagine he would find himself drawn to these two. The adventures they create with one another would be sure to intrigue the master of the sleeping world.

Blade Vs. 4 Famous Co-Stars

 

You have to feel bad for Mahershala Ali.  He was announced as the MCU Blade to much fanfare back in 2019... and his movie is still in development hell.  First it was plagued by script rewrites and they have completely started over at least once.  As soon as the production seemed to have found its footing, Hollywood was hit by actors' and writers' strikes, still unresolved.  There is still no sign of a Blade movie on the schedule even looking a few years down the road. Maybe the role is cursed and not just the character?

Flaming Carrot and Groot

 

We've seen Adult Groot in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Baby Groot in the sequel, and Teen Groot in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.  What stage will Groot be in for the third Guardians film?  It's supposed to take place a few years after Endgame (and Thor: Love and Thunder, in which we may get a Teen Groot appearance).  It will be interesting to see the personality tweaks that he will be given.

X-Men and Spaceman Spiff

 

I  have been rereading the entire run of Calvin and Hobbes and I am about half way through.  It amazes me how Bill Watterson really hit the ground running with the comic strip.  Often you'll see a progression in the first few years of a strip, but he had the character designs, personalities and comedic style pretty much fully formed right from the beginning.  On the other end, he never let the quality wane, either.  If anything, he stayed at top form right until the final installment.  This is my third or fourth time reading these and I am still enjoying them as much as the first time around. 

Calvin & Hobbes and The Iron Giant

These are two of my favorite properties ever - but I don't think I want either to return.  The Iron Giant is a flawless animated film, and I just can't see how a sequel would be able to live up to it (I wasn't even crazy about the Giant showing up in Ready Player One).  Bill Watterson finished Calvin & Hobbes while it was still at its peak, and nobody else is qualified to take it over for him.  Even if he wanted to return to the strip himself, so much time has passed that I don't know if it would be able to capture the same magic as the first time around.  I could be wrong - I keep liking Toy Story sequels after I think they should have stopped, after all!

Rocket Raccoon & Groot and Calvin & Hobbes

This was a suggestion by Mike Shirley, a Patron of this Blog, among others. It seems that the third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy has been put off for a while, while the search continues for a new director to replace James Gunn.  Marvel has so many new properties to introduce that maybe a pause wont be a bad thing.  We still have to find out in what shape and how intact the Guardians will be after the events of the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, after all.  Hopefully, though,  we will see them back within five years - with Warlock in the mix!

Calvin and Hobbes on Hoth

I'm not sure what to expect from the upcoming Han Solo film.  The studio changed directors halfway through and as a result there have been some major changes, including at least one character being completely written out.  Still, the new director is Ron Howard, who is clearly very talented - plus there was similar behind the scenes turmoil with Rogue One, and I loved how that film turned out.  I have fingers crossed that they can pull this one off as well.

Captain Carrot & The Zoo Crew and Man-Thing

Marvel Studios redeemed Daredevil and The Punisher after some misguided theatrical attempts, why not Man-Thing?  They can't let that Syfy movie be his only live action representation.  Where would he show up though?  A Doctor Strange sequel might be a good place.  I'd love for them to find a way to have him mix it up with The Hulk, too (and indeed, his visage was spotted in the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok).

Stupendous Man Vs. Venom

Here's a pairing that I would never have thought of, but I really liked the Skottie Young Venom image and wanted to find a place to use it.  Young's art fits in well with Bill Watterson's.  Both have the ability to create a cartoonish world in which the characters and objects still have a definite weight to them.

Kermit the Frog and Throg

I was born at the perfect time for The Muppet Show.  I grew up with Kermit on Sesame Street and as I outgrew that he branched off into his own entertainment show.  I loved it and remember thinking it was cool that my Dad liked the humor on it just as much as I did.  The first three seasons were released on DVD and I truly enjoyed re-watching all of the old episodes, they brought back so many memories and still made me laugh.  For some reason the rest of the series has never been released.  I can't imagine sales on the first three seasons could have been that bad, so I wonder why.  With the M Muppets returning to the movies, I figured I would hear something about more DVD/Blu-Ray releases, but nothing yet.

Plastic Man and Deadpool

These two wise guys may have been created a generation apart, but I think they would work perfectly well in a story together.  They both see their respective worlds differently from any other hero and neither ever seems to take things too seriously, no matter how dire they situation they find themselves in. Whether they would get along or be at odds, it would be a fun story to read!

Cloak & Dagger and Boba Fett

I have wanted to feature the very cool artwork of Skottie Young on here for some time, but he has such a signature style that it is hard to mesh it with the work of other illustrators.  I have admired his work for quite some time, his scratchy style gives everything a sense of life and movement.  He seems to be at home with a wide range of subject types, be they magical, horrific or whimsical.  Hopefully we will see a lot more from him in the future.
