Darkwing Duck Vs. Dynomutt

 

With the announcement of a live action Jetsons film in the works, perhaps my dream of seeing Dynomutt of the big screen is a bit closer.  I mean, Scooby Doo has had his cinematic day multiple times now, let's get everyone's favorite mechanical mutt into the movies!

Maybe they missed their window, as comic book movies are having a tough time lately - but I really wish we had gotten a Hanna Barbera Cinematic Universe.  Start with Space Ghost, then Johnny Quest, Dynomutt, The Herculoids and more could follow afterwards.  Superhero fatigue be damned, I'd buy my tickets!

The Flash enters The Laff-A-Lympics

 

I'm going to have to see if there are any episodes of Laff-A-Lympics or Wacky Races around to watch.  I haven's seen an episode of either since they originally aired, but I remember getting a real kick out of the cartoon crossover show.  Maybe the new Me TV Toons channel will play them (if Comcast ever carries it).

Well before Crisis on Infinite Earths or Secret Wars, The Laff-A-Lympics blew my young mind. Here was a show that took a whole bunch of cartoon characters from different shows and put them all together for one big free for all!  It was a cinematic universe before cinematic universes were a thing, and a crossover nut like me thought it was just about the coolest idea ever.

I recently checked out the new Scooby-Doo and Krypto Too! animated movie and got a kick out of it.  The only thing missing was a meeting between the Dog of Steel and the Dog Made of Steel!  I thought that this would be a good place to include that missing chapter.

Metal Men and Big Guy & Rusty (And More!)

 

For this Anniversary Issue, I thought I would go for an all-robotic theme. Looking at all of these match-ups, I'm not sure which one I would want to read first. Probably the lead feature, especially if it sported George Perez or Geoff Darrow art like the cover image. But, any story with a robot in it is entertaining to me, as they often offer some keen insights into the human condition.

Ace and The Dogs of War in: "Stark Kraven Mad!"

 

Ace and the Dogs of War first appeared way back in STF #415.  Ace later joined Krypto in battling Kraven in STF #3505.  It looks like The Hunter is still perturbed by that altercation and is looking to take his revenge out on Ace's whole team.  What better reason to end their 9-year hiatus?

My heart would have skipped a beat if I had seen this team up on TV back in the 70's.  I know that Dynomutt and Blue Falcon were somewhat more comedic spins on superheroes, but I tool them very seriously as a kid.  They fell under the Hanna-Barbera umbrella so this crossover could have been done.  DC's done a bunch of comic books teaming their roster of heroes with the HB characters, but I haven't seen this one yet.

Teen Titans and Ben 10 (And More!)

 

Watching Saturday morning cartoons was a treasured time for me as a kid.  In addition to all of the colorful characters I saw, it was also a rare moment of solitude for me during the week.  I was the second youngest of seven children, so I was always in the midst of a crowd at home. On some Saturdays, I would be able to get up before everyone else and have an hour or two just to myself.  Alone time was a precious commodity to me in those days!

This was a pairing that I had considered including in my Hanna Barbera/Marvel anniversary issue in STF #3100, but I thought that it was worthy of having a cover all its own.  Has anyone seen Scoob! yet?  I saw that Blue Falcon and Dynomutt are featured in the movie and I was wondering if it was worth checking out for fans of those characters.

G.I. Robot and Dynomutt

I remember seeing Dynomutt and The Blue Falcon appearing as guest stars on Scooby-Doo or as two of the contestants on Laff-A-Lympics, and getting a real kick out of them.  these appearances were just teases, though - I always wished that they would have gotten a series of their own.  A robotic superhero dog, with his human sidekick?  I would have tuned in every Saturday!

I thought it was cool that Redwing was presented as a drone in Captain America: Civil War, and liked how the tech was used.  Still it would have been even cooler if they could have found a way to include the actual avian Redwing.  I love the idea of superhero pets and partners. One reason I want to see a Batman Beyond movie is to have Ace the Bat-Hound on the big screen.

Dynomutt and Robotman

DC has had some fun teaming their heroes up with the stars of Hanna-Barbera, so maybe we will see something close to this one day.  I understand that the Doom Patrol will be featured on DC's upcoming streaming  channel Titans show.  I hope they do a live action Cliff Steele justice.  So far the I have seen costumes that look great (Robin, Hawk and Dove), and some that I am not impressed with (Starfire, Raven, Beast Boy), so I'll keep my fingers crossed the DP is represented well.

Machine Man and Dynomutt

I love that DC has not only brought back a bunch of great Hanna Barbera characters in new titles but will now be crossing them over in a series of Annuals. I remember doing a Space Ghost/Green Lantern cover on this blog and folks responding that they would love to see DC actually pair the two - and now we are getting one for real!  I only wish that Dynomutt and the Blue Falcon were a part of the fun though.  I'd love to see them mix it up with Batman and Ace the Bat-Hound.

Gyro Gearloose, Dynomutt and Inspector Gadget

Inspector Gadget was a little past my cartoon watching prime, but I can understand the appeal that he has.  He definitely reminds me of one of my childhood favorites, Dynomutt.  Changeable robotic limbs and an array of hidden gizmos made the Scooby-esque pooch very appealing to my young eyes, not to mention the fact that he was partnered with the very cool looking Blue Falcon.

Out of all the animals on Earth, dogs are the species that we humans most often cast as heroes.  I think that has got to be attributed to their loyalty.  I have heard many real life stories of heroic pooches, and it's always fun to root for them when I see a dog hero do their thing on screen or in print.

I didn't follow too many funny animal type comics when I was growing up, I was all about the superheroes.  Now, when the cartoon characters we also superheroes, that was a different story.  Disney comics were another exception.  Even though the stories skewed a bit young for me, I always had to check them out because of the gorgeous artwork within.

Ace and the Dogs of War

I love superheroes and I love dogs, so when the two are combined it really captures my interest.  I know I am not the only one who must feel that way because once I started featuring new teams on this blog, an all-pooch crew was one of the more common requests I would get.  I think a team like this, once they stopped sniffing each other's butts, would be unstoppable!

Dynomutt & The Blue Falcon and Spider-Man

Who wouldn't have wanted to tune in and see this pairing together on TV in the early 80's?  I used to love seeing cartoon crossovers back in the day.  Birdman showing up on Space Ghost, Batman meeting Shaggy and Scoobie, The Laff-A-Lympics, even Fred and Barney meeting The Thing... they were all so cool to me!  Those offbeat and sometimes cross-company team ups were right up my alley and fueled my imagination.  They were definitely a big influence on this blog.

I know he was just created as a sidekick character for the comedy lead Dynomutt, but I always though that The Blue Falcon had a really cool look. I thought that this team could be played straight and still work. I mean, he had a robotic dog! How cool is that? I also liked that they would make appearances with Scooby Doo, it made me gave me the sense of a larger universe within the cartoon world.
