Brenda Starr, Reporter was not the typical type of comic strip that I liked growing up - I was more into action heroes and humor strips.  Still, the illustration was by the great Ramona Fradon, so I found myself following the daily adventures.  Fradon recently passed away, but she left us decades upon decades of amazing artwork - she will always be remembered.

I thought that it was time that two of comics' most enduring supporting characters shared a cover.  I like in comics when we are reminded that it's not always up to the heroes to come to the rescue - sometimes the non-powered, un-costumed folks have to jump into the fray as well.  As Aunt May said in Spider-Man 2, "I believe there's a hero in all of us."

J. Jonah Jameson Vs. Dennis the Menace

This oddball match up was comes from a suggestion by Mike Shirley and seconded by Bob Greenwade, both Patrons of this blog, and I thought it was crazy enough to give a shot.  I remember reading Dennis the Menace when I was a boy and often taking the side of Mr. Wilson - I could see why he was annoyed by the kid! Then again, I've always been Team Tom, Wile E. and Sylvester rather than Team Jerry, Roadrunner and Tweety.

Presenting Part One of a Two-Part Tale! Jameson has been known to hire oddball characters to help him target the Wall-Crawler, so I can see this story happening.  A clash seems inevitable - but there's one person that might be able to stop things from getting too out of control (longtime STF visitors may have an idea as to who that is).  Make sure you come back tomorrow to see how it all shakes out!

Batman and Spider-Man in "Bruce Wayne: Scapegoat!"

Like many in my age group, this first Marvel superhero I saw in live action was Spider-Man on The Electric Company.  While I thought it was cool to see him outside of the comics, there was something a little creepy about how they made him mute on the show.  Sure, it was so us kids could have the educational value of reading his thought bubbles, but I still found it off-putting.  It really illustrated the importance of Spidey's wisecracking persona, which did much to offset the appearance of a full face-masked character.

J. Jonah Jameson Joins The Green Lantern Corps

I am surprised that there has been no mention of J. Jonah Jameson or The Daily Bugle in connection with the Amazing Spider-Man sequel.  I understand that the movie will have enough on it's hands with the introduction of Electro, The Rhino and Norman Osborn among others, but still the whole newspaper photographer angle seems like a big part of the Spidey mythos to leave out for a second time.  The JJJ scenes from the first trilogy were some of the most well received, and it will be hard to top J.K. Simmons' portrayal when they do try to recast the role.  That shouldn't stop them from trying though!

J. Jonah Jameson Vs. Perry White

One of the main things missing for me in the latest Spider-Man film was J. Jonah Jameson and the Daily Bugle.  Of course, J.K. Simmons did such a great job in the role, it is understandable that the producers would be hesitant include the character.  Still, he's too big a part of the Spider-Man mythos to ignore, so I imagine they will include him the next time out.  Whoever they cast has some big shoes to fill.

Lawrence Fishburne will be the latest actor to portray Perry White, and boy does that make me feel old!  Martin Sheen and Lawrence Fishburne, two skinny kids from Apocalypse Now, are now starring as Uncle Ben and Perry White.  What happened to the time?

Spider-Man Vs. Freddy Krueger

Happy Halloween!  I was the perfect age when the first Nightmare on Elm Street hit theaters.  I'm not a huge horror fan these days but back in high school there was nothing more fun than popping in a scary flick with a bunch of friends and junk food.  This franchise was especially fun because of the creative ways they used dreamscapes and Robert Englund's darkly humorous performances.  I think my favorite outing  was the third one - I was a big fan of Kincaid.  I haven't seen the updated version featuring Jackie Earle Haley - hopefully they kept in the laughs as well as the kills.

You guessed it, I was in a goofy mood again and came up with this one. You have to admit though, if you saw this issue on the stands, you would have to pick it up and leaf through it!

J. Jonah Jameson is one of the greatest supporting characters ever in comics. While being a constant thorn in Spider-Man's side, Stan Lee also gave him an underlying decency and strong journalistic code beneath all his bombast and bluster. You never know if you are going to be rooting for him or against him when a story starts, and that makes for a great character.

J.K. Simmons portrayal of the Daily Bugle Publisher remains one of the most faithful comic characters ever brought to screen. Whoever takes on the role in the rebooted film franchise has big shoes to fill!
