Mars Attacks 4 Famous Co-Stars

An All-Martian issue was a request by Bob Greenwade, a Patron of this blog, among others. Gathering images, I was struck by the different personalities of all of these Mars characters.  Any tale combining them all would be sure to be filled with conflict!

Mars Attacks The Borg

I never thought I would see a scenario where I was rooting for The Borg, but this might be one of them.  Will the Martians assimilate or Ack Ack Ack their way to victory?  It would be fun to find out!

Mars Attacks The Flash

Uh oh!  Is even the fastest man alive swift enough to get out of this predicament?  I'm sure those vile Martians will give him a run for his money!

Mars Attacks the Planet of the Apes

Both of these properties have crossed over with other comics and franchises, but as far as I know they have never crossed over with one another.  It seems like a natural pairing to me.  I know that this would be one instance in which I would definitely be rooting for the apes!

Mars Attacks Star Wars!

The full trailer for Star Wars: the Last Jedi has me looking forward to the next chapter in the saga.  My main complaints about the last installment were a few to many parallels to A New Hope and the lack of Luke Skywalker, both of which look to be addressed this time around.  It will be interesting to see where director Rian Johnson takes the characters going forward.

Mars Attacks Kolchak: The Night Stalker

Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! movie seems to hold up pretty well to me when viewed today.  The large cast looked like they had a blast making it, and the effects still work due to the B-Movie vibe.  I am a little surprised we never saw any signs of a sequel.  I don't remember it being a box office dud, bat maybe it just didn't make enough profit to warrant a follow up.

Mars Attacks John Carter!

I'm not sure why the recent John Carter film was not a big hit.  I thought that it was a pretty enjoyable adventure with some fun action sequences and interesting character and set design.  Was it the direction, the leading man, or just unlucky cinematic timing? It's too bad, I would have liked to have seen some more installments in the franchise.

Mars Attacks Howard the Duck!

I have read a few rumors that Howard the Duck will be showing up again in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.  While still a small role, it should be larger than the post credits cameo that appeared after the first film.  I hope this speculation turns out to be true - I love that Marvel is willing to embrace somie of its more outlandish concepts for their film universe.

Mars Attacks The Phantom!

I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Earl Norem.  Through making this blog and regularly checking out comic images, I have become a huge fan of his work.  No matter what genre he was working on, Norem always found a way to present a lushly detailed cover to draw the casual reader in.   His painted work is a feast for the eyes, and always has a great pulp feeling to it.  He will be missed.

Mars Attacks! led by Marvin the Martian

Look, if your goal  is to annihilate humankind, you might as well  be enthusiastic in your work, and that's why I imagine an issue featuring these characters would be a lot of fun.  The destruction of Earth is a morbid plan, but if presented through the point of view of the would be conquerors, I have to admit it would probably be an engaging read.

Mars Attacks The Martian Manhunter

These days, audiences and readers are used to three-dimensional villains who reveal shades of gray and deep motivations behind their nefarious deeds.  That said, there is something appealing about how gleefully evil the Martians from Mars Attacks have always been.  Don't look for a spark of sympathy or a chance at redemption with these guys - they are bad and they love it!  They couldn't be further removed from DC's most famous Martian, and that difference in personalities could make for a fun tale.

Batman and Mars Attacks!

In my fevered imagination, Tim Burton would direct the film adaptation to this story.  While his Batman from 1989 shows its age, and has a spotty script, it still holds up for me due to the visual flair and solid performances by Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Michael Gough.  Mars Attacks! is one of my favorite Burton movies. it has a very fun cast and there's something immensely enjoyable about the glee with which the martians invade the Earth.  Sarah Jessica Parker's head on the dog body always makes me laugh.

I wasn't sure what to do with this cover and then I remembered that Mars Attacks! began as a series of trading cards, I found a set of Batman cards form the same era and the result is one of my personal favorite covers, I was happy with the way this one turned out.
