Phalanx of Phantoms

 

Marc Tyler Nobleman, a Patron of this blog, suggested I have the Phantom Stranger meet The Phantom of  The Opera, and that concept just started snowballing!  With a team this large, I couldn't fit all of the artists used in the labels.  This cover features illustrations by Ross Andru, Jaime Hernandez, Andy Smith, Peter Snejberg, Steve Mitchell, Herb Trimpe and Paul Becton.

Legion of Super-Heroes Vs. The Micronauts

 

If Marvel movies have taught us anything, it's time travel seems to be a lot more possible by passing through The Microverse.  Given that fact, I could definitely see a crossover happening between these two teams. 

Freedom Fighters and Agents of Atlas

 

Between the Golden Age and Modern Ages of heroes, these were two teams that held down the fort. I have enjoyed both their original appearances as well as the modern revivals of both of these groups.  I'd love to see a story set in the 50's or 60's or even the present day that includes them both.

Doctor Strange and The Terrifics

 

I don't keep up with many titles these days, opting to trade wait if something gets really great reviews.  One series I did pick up in total was The Terrifics.  A great cast of characters involved in old school comic action is what the title provided, and it was a fun read.  It's too bad the series was canceled, but with the rumors that James Gunn is looking to bring them to the big screen as part of the DCU, hopefully they will get another chance down the line.

Phantom Girl and Kitty Pryde

 

I got a kick out of the characterization of Kitty Pryde during her first few years in Uncanny X-Men. I liked how she could not settle on a costume or a code name for a while, trying out different things.  I think that's how I would be as a kid that got invited to join a super group.

The Terrifics Vs. Doctor Doom

 

I don't read many current comics these days - the overall quality seems to have dropped and Amazon's takeover (and in my opinion, destruction) of Comixology has turned me off of new purchases recently.  One series that I did check out, and quite liked, has been The Terrifics.  It's just old school comic book action with a great cast of characters.  The series has come to an end, but I hope the team hasn't.

Legion of Super-Heroes and Futurama

 

I was very happy to read that contract negotiations were successful and the entire voice cast of Futurama is returning for new episodes of the series. I can't wait to see what the new episodes have in store and I look forward to seeing old favorites like Clamps and The Hedonism Bot.

I'm also glad to use the animated LSH here.   That cartoon was a lot of fun, and kept getting better as it went along for its too-short run.

The Legion of Super-Heroes and The Man-Thing

One of the fun parts of this project is scouring over covers from every era of comics for images to use.  There are definitely some artists who really stand out at the top of the field for me when it comes to cover images that are both beautiful to look at and which really sell the story being told inside.  In my opinion, Marvel's greatest cover artist was Gil Kane, while the DC title easily goes to Nick Cardy, whose work I used here.  Whether it was a Superhero, Horror, Western or even Romance title, Cardy was always able to capture a pivotal moment from the issue and present it in a very enticing way.  I would see those covers and just had to find out what happened inside.  It's no wonder DC utilized him as their main cover artist for so many titles.
