Popeye and Donald Duck

 

I'm thinking these two might have a similar reaction to one another that Duck Dodgers and Spaceman Spiff did on the cover that they shares a couple of days ago.  They might find some common ground as sailors, but their tempers might just get the best of them - until Olive and Daisy set them straight, of course!

Popeye and Thor

 

I thought it would be fun to put these two characters up, and didn't realize until I was in the middle of creating this cover that their outfits were so color coordinated.  It's just a pure coincidence, but they really do look like they go together. Let's just hope Thor doesn't use Mjolnir to summon a storm the next time Popeye says, "Well, blow me down!"

Popeye Vs. Cap'n Crunch

My parents had us kids on a strict diet when we were growing up - no additives or preservatives, no artificial flavors, no sugar (hey, there were seven of us, I can't blame them).  Our cereal was usually something along the lines of shredded wheat or Kix.  So, when I would go to a friends house and they had the cereals I saw on TV like Cap'n Crunch it was a real treat for me.  I don't have much of a sweet tooth these days but every once in a while I'll get a box of Peanut Butter Crunch just because it was denied to me as a child.

Popeye and Aquaman

I have to believe that the portrayal of Aquaman on Batman: The Brave and Bold was a big influence on Jason Mamoa's take on the sea king for the big screen.  I was originally wary of the bombastic "Outrageous!" version of Arthur Curry on the cartoon, but was quickly won over.  Likewise, I was still unsure about Mamoa as Aquaman after Justice League, but his solo film was so fun and unapologetically comics inspired that I just had to go along for the ride and had a blast with it.

Sub-Mariner Vs. Popeye

I'm wondering where The Sub-Mariner will first show up now that Marvel has the rights to use him in the movies.  Aquaman will beat him to the punch ans far as a solo underwater hero film is concerned so maybe they will go in another direction and he will show up alongside the Fantastic Four.  The whole Reed/Sue/Namor love triangle angle would be perfect for some onscreen drama to add to the action scenes.  Of course that means the need to introduce the FF first!

Asterix Vs. Popeye

Neither of these two adventurers are known for backing away from a fight, and they both have incredible strength, so I can see them throwing down with one another.  While Asterix has his potion-granted might, Popeye's spinach seems to allow him to perform all sorts of stunts, so it would probably be pretty evenly matched.

Popeye And Groo the Wanderer

I have been a fan of Sergio Aragones for as long as I can remember.  His contributions to Mad Magazine were always my favorite part of the issues and I loved squinting to see all the cool tiny "Marginal" cartoons that he would draw in the borders.  Now, a question:  Have those Marginals ever been collected together in one edition?  I am sure it would be a painstaking chore, but if there were such a complilation for sale I would purchase it in a heartbeat!

Popeye and Superman

Now this is a team up that really should have happened - in animation!  Fleischer Studios was not only responsible for the classic Superman cartoons that inspired Bruce Timm and Paul Dini to create Batman: The Animated Series -  they produced over a hundred Popeye shorts as well.  How cool would it have been to see them pair their two superhuman characters together for a crossover cartoon?

Tintin and Popeye

I remember watching a local TV variety program called The Uncle Gus Show, because once per episode, the host would introduce a (usually black and white) Popeye cartoon.  Back in those days it was the only place I could see the animated adventures of the world's most famous sailor, and his nemesis Bluto.  There was something special about these cartoons, the creativity and detail involved in those shorts were definitely above the standard cartoon fare I was used to.  I later discovered that these were produced by The Fleischer Studios, which explains the quality.  Whether it was Popeye, Superman, Betty Boop or one of their other properties, their cartoons were always top notch.
