Black Panther and Jonny Quest

 

For a brief moment, the classic Jonny Quest cartoons showed up on HBO Max.  I only got about five episodes in before they were pulled off of the service.  Hopefully they will return or show up somewhere else that I can check out the rest.  It was great seeing them again after all these years.

Doc Savage and Jonny Quest

 

This is another pairing that feels long overdue to me.  Two adventurers that regularly face off against pulp-inspired villains would be bound to cross paths at one point or another. It would certainly make for an exciting story, or episode of a cartoon.

Jonny Quest and Superman

 

Kandor was an interesting concept.  A miniaturized city in a bottle that Superman could have non-powered adventures in provided plenty of story ideas.  My only problem with it was that it really made it hard to still think of Kal-El as the last son of Krypton.  Supergirl and the Phantom Zone villains were one thing, but now there was an entire city of Kryptonians still alive and thriving? So much for the being sole survivor of a doomed planet! Perhaps that issue was dealt with at some point. At any rate, I didn't let it bother me too much, because I enjoyed the stories that took place there.

Jonny Quest and Swamp Thing in: ""That's no Yeti!"

 

Judging from the dialogue here, it's clear that this cover takes place slightly before the events of STF #3325, where Jonny and Swampy first appeared together on this blog.  That these tales appear out of order has nothing at all to do with me forgetting that I had already recently paired them.  That is a completely ridiculous suggestion and almost not even worth bringing up. I just like keeping visitors on their toes here at The Lost Issues. Yeah, that's the ticket!

Jonny Quest and Green Lantern

 

Hal Jordan is an adventurer at heart, so I think that he would appreciate the fact that Jonny and Hadji share that spirit.  Stick the three of them in The Savage Land, with a mysterious MacGuffin, and you've got a story that writes itself!  Well, I would read it anyway!

Superman's Pal, Jonny Quest

 

I am happy to combine the artwork of two greats for this cover.  Doug Wildey is an artist that I was aware of, but began to truly appreciate when looking for Jonny Quest images for this blog.  I have been a huge Steve Rude fan for many years.  So  much so, that I commissioned three sketches from him, and purchased up a page of his from Spider-Man: Lifeline:

Swamp Thing and Johnny Quest

 

Bernie Wrightson was a perfect artist to bring Swamp Thing to life.  He was a master of the human form, as well as light and shadow, and was also quite adept at creating cool creature designs.  That was a perfect set of skills to give readers an iconic muck encrusted mockery of a man that they would still root for, as well as a roster of creepy villains.  I know it worked on me!

Deadman and Jonny Quest

 

I was looking for something to read recently and picked up a digital TPB of Neal Adam's recent Deadman work.  His artistic skills have not waned much at all over the years, and it's great to see his innovative panel layouts and dramatic character poses.  The story was just crazy though, with a wild plot that was hard to keep track of.  I wasn't complaining that much because it gave Adams an excuse to draw Batman, Zatanna, The Spectre, The Phantom Stranger and The Demon as well as Boston Brand. He left the tale with seeds for a sequeland I'll definitely check out any follow up that he decides to create.

Hawkman and Jonny Quest

I thoroughly enjoyed Future Quest, the revival of several Hanna-Barbera  characters, a few years back.  I hope there will be more to come.  I still say there is a ton of potential in a HB Cinematic Universe, and a live action Jonny Quest adaptation would be a perfect place to start one.

Tarzan and Jonny Quest

These two properties were among my favorite non-superhero cartoons when I was a kid.  Both had limited production values, with heavy re-use of stock footage and music cues.  Still, the strength of the characters and the exotic locations and situations were enough to keep me coming back.  It would have been great to see their animated worlds collide.

Jonny Quest and Robin

I watched these two boy heroes in adventures on Saturday mornings when I grew up, and always thought it would be cool if they got together.  While Robin had access to all sorts of cool gadgets and vehicles, he was still a junior partner.  Jonny may have been a bit more low tech, but he definitely seemed like the leader of his group to me.  Together, they could have taught each other a thing or two.

Jonny Quest Vs. Fin Fang Foom

This is another property that I am surprised has not been made into a movie franchise.  It's got action, likeable characters, and huge nostalgia value.  Perhaps if Shazam! is a big hit, studios might take a look at its potential for a live action treatment.

Challengers of the Unknown and Jonny Quest

With Jonny Quest's sense of adventure, I can see him joining up with a team like the Challengers of the Unknown.  He's definitely got experience with going up against evil organizations and escaping near-death situations, after all.  Heck, he'd probably eventually end up running the group!

Jonny Quest and Chance Falconer

I'm still holding out hope for new adventures of Leave it to Chance some day.  I loved what James Robinson and Paul Smith did with that series and always have wanted to see more.  It may seem like a long shot but if DC can bring back Jonny Quest and a host of other Hanna-Barbera characters and even team them up with heroes of the DCU, then anything can happen, right?

Man-Thing and Jonny Quest

I'm loving that Jonny Quest is again in the spotlight with Future Quest.  Even better, the title is used as a springboard for bringing back many other Hanna-Barbera action heroes. And even better still, those characters will be crossing over with some of DC's most popular heroes in an upcoming series of annuals! Those promise to be fun comics.

Jonny Quest and Wolverine

I was happy to see that DC is Planning on bringing back Jonny Quest and the rest of the classic Hanna-Barbera action stars in a bunch of new titles.  The one that has me most intrigued is Future Quest, by Jeff Parker and Evan Shaner, which will feature Jonny and his crew alongside the likes of Space Ghost, The Herculoids and Mightor.  Cartoon stars of my youth in a team-up title?  Sign me up!

Dick Tracy and Jonny Quest

Watching Gotham reminds me of how cool it would be to have an ongoing Dick Tracy series.  If you are going to have a police procedural set in a city rife with strange criminals, Chester Gould's classic comic strip is a perfect property to adapt.  While Gotham is fun, we won't really get to see the villains fully formed because of the prequel nature of the series.  With a Dick Tracy show, we could have the bad guys and the city's top cop in their prime.

Tintin and Jonny Quest (Part Two)

Now that Tintin has had his big box office debut, it is high time for Jonny Quest to shine on the silver screen as well.  His tales were always packed with adventure, danger, and exotic locales and had all the elements necessary for a fun animation to live action transition.  Hopefully some big time producer who remembers the old cartoons as fondly as I do will get the ball rolling one of these days.

Tintin and Jonny Quest (Part One)

I was pleasantly surprised by the recent Tintin film. I was concerned at first that the characters would look creepy in CGI, as often happens in motion-capture films.  Fortunately the right balance was struck between human features and Herge's character designs that it looked pretty cool to me.  Some of the Thompson Twins' bumbling didn't  translate well, but for the most part I thought the film was increibly well realized.  The action and pacing reminded me of Spielberg's earlier work on the original Indiana Jones films, he really seemed to be having fun as a director here.  I understand Peter Jackson will be helming the next one and that will be cool to see.

The Thing and Jonny Quest

This is one of those covers where I got lucky and the images really fit well together. Even so, it was kind of a shame that I had to remove Jonny and Hadji's lady friend to make room for Bashful Benjy. Dave Stevens really did draw some of the most beautiful women in comics (not that his talents were limited to females). When he passed, comicdom truly lost one of the all time great artists.

I'd still love to see a live action Jonny Quest feature someday. It's a property that has all the elements to make an exciting tale full of mystery, action and cliffhangers. Maybe some day...
