Ghost Rider and The Shadow

 

I don't think that a flaming skull-headed cyclist would be all that out of place in the noir world of The Shadow.  At the very least, I'd be interested in checking out a tale that combined the two.

There aren't too many heroes that would make The Shadow nervous, but I think that The Spectre might be one of them.  It would be interesting to see how they interact.

Zatanna is long overdue for a big screen debut, and I am sure she will be a big part of the cinematic DCU as a team member or even in a solo project.  The Shadow had his 90's film, which has its moments - but I think enough time has passed that I'd like to see him adapted again for live action.

I wonder how The Shadow would have worked with the first mystery men of The JSA.  In some ways he was even more grim than Batman - he had no issue with using guns, for one thing.  Still, The Spectre was a founding member, and he's about as grim and lethal as you can get, so maybe Lamont Cranston could have found a home on the team.

My favorite memories of The Shadow do not come from his print or theatrical appearances, but from the classic radio plays featuring the character.  When I was a kid, we had a collection of them that we would pop in and listen to at bedtime.  I'm sure that someone has a bunch of the episodes on Youtube, I'll have to give them a listen again after all these years.

In the 90's the big comic book action movie stars were Batman, The Rocketeer, The Phantom and The Shadow.  Each of them have been brought back to the big or little screen since then except one notable exception.  Where are the new adventures of Lamont Cranston's alter ego?  It's high time we had a new live action version of The Shadow.  Perhaps a period piece streaming series would be the way to go?

The Light Brigade Vs. Dark Matter (and more!)

 

Since the timing for a new Team Cover coincides with an Anniversary Issue, I thought that it was only fitting that I had two STF teams facing off against one another.  Combining the 4th appearance of The Light Brigade with the 3rd appearance of Dark Matter seemed like natural choices given their opposite natures and the Cloak & Dagger connection.  For the back-up tale, I finally teamed Batman with comics' first character, something I have been meaning to do for years.

With the Debut of Disney+ and its new programming, Marvel is getting serious about keeping its cinematic universe cohesive.  The Freeform Cloak and Dagger series is the latest casualty of this decision.  I quite liked the show, and hope the characters show up in the MCU proper one of these days.  I was introduced to them as guest stars of Spider-Man, so it would be cool to see them with the web slinger down the line (Spidey rights permitting).

The Phantom and the Shadow

As far as I am aware, there has never been a crossover between these two pulp heroes, which really surprises me.  Other than some commission pieces, two of the earliest costumed crimefighters have never shared an adventure.  that is something that should be rectified, we need to see these classic pulp heroes fighting side by side one of these days.

My first exposure to The Shadow was not from movies, comics, or pulps - but the radio.  My father would get collections of classic radio shows for us kids to listen to at night on camping trips.  My favorites were Mystery Theater, X Minus One, and The Shadow.  You just had to love the menacing laughter that they gave to the title character.  There was no need for visuals when those audio dramas sparked so much imagination.

As far as I know, these two pulp heroes have never crossed paths, which is a little surprising.  They seem as though they would work together well in in a story.  STF Patron Ken Roskos pointed out in a previous comments section that they both had the same publisher back in the 40's so it could have happened

Phantom Stranger and The Shadow (Part Two)

Continued from yesterday's cover, we see what The Phantom Stranger has been after all along.  It's cool to see The Shadow in the movies and comics, and I have enjoyed both.  For me though, I will always be most fond of the classic radio dramas featuring the character.  They bring me back to camping trips with my family, and I have always loved the (now mostly lost) art form of the radio play.  The Shadow, Mystery Theater, X-Minus One and many other programs really knew how to stimulate the theater of the mind.

Phantom Stranger and The Shadow (Part One)

This cover comes about from a suggestion by STF Patron Ken Roskos.  I had to smack my head when I read it because I could not believe that I hadn't thought of it before, it feels like a natural.  In fact, I liked the idea of these two together so much that I made it a two-parter - so make sure to stop by again tomorrow for the thrilling conclusion!

The Question and The Shadow

I am pretty surprised that we have not seen The Question show up as a character on one of DC's TV shows.  Arrow has had a string of guest star street level heroes, and promises to add even more this season, but no word of Vic Sage joining in on the fun (or Renee Montoya, for that matter).  I wonder why because he seems like one of the easier characters to translate to live action.

Dark Matter

I thought that it might be interesting to do a team consisting of heroes that use darkness as part of their method of operation. This is a group that I did not have any trouble coming up with a roster for.   It's one of those traits that a lot of characters share, and I am sure that the artistic opportunities it provides is one of the reasons.

I have enjoyed the adventures of The Shadow in film and print form, but my favorite memories of the character are from the classic radio dramas that he was featured in.  We used to listen to those as kids when we would go on camping trips.  With his ability to cloud men's minds, he was the perfect character for those audio mysteries.
