Supergirl and Morbius

 

The Supergirl movie isn't far off, but there doesn't seem  like there is a lot of excitement for it.  Seeing Jason Mamoa as Lobo should be fun.  The trailers to me have been Just OK - The movie looks fine, just nothing that I feel that I need to run out and see. Hopefully the film will defy expectations and become a critical and commercial hit.

Whatever type of situation that would call for an alliance between these two would certainly make for a moody tale. Let's hope that this fragile truce holds long enough for them to reach their goal.

Robin and Morbius (Vs. The Grim Reaper)

 

Uh oh, looks like Dick Grayson has run afoul of the Spirit of Things Yet to Come on this fateful Christmas Eve.  Let's see what the living vampire has to say about that!

I'm not sure what kinds of rules there are against vampires in children's animation, but Morbius did not drink blood in the 90's Spider-Man animated series.  Instead they depicted him feeding on human plasma through circular growths on the palms of his hands.  For me, that seemed grosser than biting someone's neck, but I suppose the producers' thinking was that they didn't want kids running around taking chomps out of each other to emulate him.

Pat Broderick was an underrated artist.  I was already a fan of his when Fury of Firestorm #1 hit the stands and really blew me away.  Nobody has ever been able to illustrate DC's nuclear hero as well as he looked in those early issues.  Broderick also really impressed we with his work on the Ragman maxi-series, where he used the traditional 9-panel grid comics format to great effect. 

Man-Bat Joins The Sinister Six

 

Spider-Man: No Way Home kind of gave us a Sinister Six story but not really.  I guess if you count the mid-credit scene there were six Spidey villains in the mix - or if you count J. Jonah Jameson as a villain.  Still, hopefully one day down the line we'll see a true sinister six adventure on the big screen.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Morbius

 

Buffy first encountered Morbius in STF #387, but it looks like this time they are on the same side. The Morbius movie has been delayed once again.  It's becoming a situation like New Mutants, where the film's release has been pushed back so much that audiences are either forgetting about it or questioning its quality.  I actually thought New Mutants was OK when it was finally available to view, so I will hold out some hope for Morbius.

I... Vampire Vs. Morbius

I have to admit that I had very little interest in the Morbius movie until i saw the teaser trailer for it a while back.  The brief glimpse of Jared Leto in full Morbius make up looked great, far more faithful to the comics than I was expecting.  Then, Michael Keaton shows up as Adrian Toomes (The Vulture) at the end!   Now I am curious to see how much it will tie into the MCU/Sony Spider-Man movies, and who else might show up in the film.

Solomon Grundy and Morbius

With the surprise success of Venom, it looks like other Spider-Man spinoff movies will gain some steam.  Morbius with Jared Leto in the title role has been announced, and that may have potential to be cool.  And if it means that Let is to busy to ever reprise his role as The Joker again, I am OK with that as well.

Swamp Thing and Morbius

Swamp Thing is one of the coolest character in comics, but has really gotten cheesy treatments when it comes to movies and TV.  His first film was low budget and very hokey, but at least it tried to take itself somewhat seriously.  The sequel tried to go for a more tongue in cheek route, and wasn't any more successful at translating the character to live action.  Somehow those films led to a short lived TV series, which was just crazy bad... but I couldn't look away.  One episode had Swamp Thing hiding in a kid's closet and almost being found by his mom for nearly the whole 22 minutes.  Worst of all had to be the Swamp Thing animated series, complete with them song to the tune of "Wild Thing".  Yeesh.  C'mon, Warner Brothers - special effects are at a place now where we can finally have a truly cool Swamp Thing film experience!

Morbius Vs. Man-Bat in "Blood of the Bride!"

I have been a fan of Man-Bat for years, but I never know quite what I am going to get when he makes a new appearance.  I prefer him as a misunderstood hero, but he is just as likely to be used as the antagonist in a story.  All too often I find him to be treated as little more than a mindless animal, or being used as a pawn in some other villain's plot.  I wish poor old Kirk Langstrom would get a little more respect.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Blade

I have to admit that I have never seen an episode of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.  I remember thinking that it would be an ill-fated attempt to adapt a movie that wasn't all that great to begin with.  By the time I started hearing a lot of positive buzz on the program, they were already well into the series, and I didn't think I could catch up.  Since then I have become a big Joss Whedon fan, and with the advent of Netflix and other streaming video services, it's now easy to finally check out shows that I missed the first time around.  I think it is time I put Buffy on the queue and finally see what all the fuss was about.

The Demon and The Legion of Monsters

There's something cool about certain demonic heroes from Marvel and DC because they can be used as protagonists or antagonists in any given story.  Though they might be labeled heroes, their individual motivations and dispositions often put them at odds with more straight laced crimefighters.  Put a few of them togeher in one story and the real fireworks begin.  Will they save the day or just turn on each other?  Either way, it's fun to read about!

Man-Bat Vs. Morbius

I wouldn't be surprised to see Morbius appear in the sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man.  The first film seemed to be trying to capture some of the Twilight crowd, so why not go all the way and include Spidey's vampire rogue?  Still, I would prefer to see Man-Bat in a future Batman flick.  Using Batman's more outlandish and powerful foes would set the movie apart from both previous franchises and Man-Bat has the coolest visual of the bunch.  He might not be able to hold a whole film, but teaming him with Hugo Strange and Killer Croc for a "Monster Men" type plot (where Batman convinces Langstrom to switch sides at the end) could be very cool.

Now this is a cool team that I wish we could have gotten to see more of.  Like yesterdays entry with the LoEG, this is another teamed formed by pre-existing characters that share a particular genre.  it was offbeat team ups and teams like the Legion of Monsters that really fueled my imagination for what other crossovers could be possible and led to this blog.  Have they made any other appearances together as a team after their initial outing?  I have seen more modern images of them but I am not sure if they are from a full story.

Batman and Morbius

I was first introduced to Morbius in one of my all-time favorite Spider-Man arcs, where Spidey grows two extra sets of arms. There have been other attempts to merge vampires with super-heroes or super-villains, but I think Morbius was the most successful. Like the best Spider-Man villains, he was a true threat, but also had a sense of tragedy about him.

I had a hard time finding an image for this cover, and finally located one in an unlikely place - a set of Marvel stickers that came out in the 70's. Boy did that bring back memories. Each sticker featured a character with a speech balloon containing a one liner or a bad pun (For instance Medusa said, "Only my hairdresser knows for sure!") Ah, those were the days.
