Barda and The New Furies

The team is assembled at last!  I'd say that this is a pretty formidable group, more than ready for any challenges that might await them.  I have to imagine that Granny Goodness isn't going to be happy when she learns of to this new team.

Barda recruited Dart STF #5042, Xena in STF #5011, Hellcat in STF #4964 and Red Sonja in STF #4881.

Big Barda and Dart

With this adventure, Barda has finally completed her new team.  I did see at least one correct guess in the comments, congratulations!  Regular visitors will remember that she recruited Xena in STF #5011, Hellcat in STF #4964 and Red Sonja in STF #4881. Now all that remains is for the New Furies to assemble together.

Xena and Big Barda

Here we see that Barda has chosen the another member to join her new team!  Regular visitors will remember that she recruited Hellcat in STF #4964 and Red Sonja in STF #4881. She still has a one more slots on the roster to fill, who will it be?  Hint - its a character that appeared in comics from DC, but is not part of the DCU.  All will be revealed on a future cover, so stay tuned!

Big Barda and Hellcat

It looks like Barda has chosen the next member of her team!  Regular visitors will remember that she recruited Red Sonja in STF #4881. She still has a couple more slots on the roster to fill, though - who will she select next?  Future covers will tell, so stay tuned!

Big Barda and Red Sonja

Barda is seeking out some great warrior women to fill out her new team, and asking Red Sonja to join seemed like the perfect way to start. There are still three more spots to fill, though.  Who will be recruited next?  Stay tuned to future issues of STF to find out!

Big Barda Vs. The Hulk

Something tells me that these two would get along pretty well.  Even so, it would be fun to watch them in battle with one another.  They could really let loose and present a truly spectacular fight scene if the artist assigned to it cuts loose as well.

Storm and Big Barda

Dave Cockrum and Jack Kirby created two of my favorite superheroine costumes when they came up for the looks for Storm and Big Barda.  That would be reason enough for me to be interested in  a story that featured them together.  I'm betting there would be plenty of great action as well.

Big Barda and Wolverine

I've always liked the few heroes that came in well under 6 feet - like the original Atom , Puck, and of course (easily the most famous one) Wolverine. In the  movies, he's been played by Hugh Jackman for the past 20 years, frustratingly making him one of the taller onscreen heroes.  Let's hope the new Marvel version, whenever he should appear, is a bit shorter! It will be one clear way to make this new version separate from what has gone before.

Fin Fang Foom Vs. Mr. Miracle & Big Barda

DC seems to be having some trouble adapting The New Gods to the big screen.  Zach Snyder introduced elements in his Justice League movie, but Warner Bros does not seem to want to move forward with his vision.  They also cancelled Ava DuVernay's New Gods movie that was in development, and are most likely not encouraged by the muted reactions to Marvels similar Eternals.  I've got the perfect solution - go with a New Gods animated series first!  That will give the property the proper length to tell an expansive story that features such a large cast of characters.  If it's a hit, audiences will be primed to se a live action version as a follow up.

Big Barda and Medusa

Here are two characters I am dying to see in the movies.  Barda has a great back story and I love the juxtaposition between her as a warrior in battle and loving wife and partner of Scott Free.  Medusa needs far better treatment than she received on the Inhumans tv series.  Let's not chop all of her hair off, for a start!  I'd love to see her powers in action with a big MCU budget.

Avengers meet Mr. Miracle and Big Barda

It looks like the Avengers and New Gods have patched up their differences from STF #3000... and I have to say, Mr. Miracle and Barda look like they would fit right in with the team.  I do hope that they and the rest of the New Gods get another shot at the big screen, now that the Ava DuVernay film has been scrapped.  Telling the story of their upbringing on Apokolips and eventual romance would be compelling and provide lots of great moments for a movie.

She-Hulk and the Female Furies

I thought that it was hilarious when Ed Asner voiced the animated version of Granny Goodness, Genius casting.  Still, who could play her in live action, if the New Gods movie ever gets made?  I've heard names like Oprah Winfrey and Kathy Bates mentioned, and I can see both.  For me, I think that Margo Martindale would be perfect in the role.

Thank you to Tom Zilla, a Patron of this Blog, for suggesting a Big Barda/She-Hulk adventure...

Thor and Big Barda

DC has used Darkseid as a central villain on their Superman and Justice League animated shows, and a few of the other Fourth World characters have made brief appearances.  As cool as those appearances were, there's still a ton of potential in these Kirby Creations and I hope we can see Big Barda and the rest of the New Gods get some real focus in the form of one of DC's animated features or perhaps even a live action film down the road.

Justice League of America Vs. The X-Men (and more!)

When it comes to Anniversary issues, there are a few that really stand out for me.  Probably my favorite is Justice League of America #200, a brilliant story that hearkened back to the team's first adventure and featured the greatest line up of artists that have ever appeared in a single issue - Kane, Bolland, Aparo, Perez, Broderick, Kubert, Giordano and Infantino - just great stuff.  I also have a fondness for Avengers #200 and Detective Comics #500.  It's too bad that with all the relaunches and renumbering that comics go through these days that such milestones are seldom reached anymore.

Big Barda and Valkyrie

This would be a great battle, and I don't know how I would call it.  Whoever won, it would sure be fun to watch!  I am glad to see that Valkyrie has been enjoying a larger profile lately.  I have liked the character since her days as a Defender and have always felt that she was worthy of wider recognition.  Big Barda is a character that works well in or out of her Fourth World setting, and hopefully DC wont wait too long before reintroducing her.

The Thing and Big Barda

One of the reasons that I wanted to use Thing as the new host of this cover project was that I wanted to see if I could do some Kirby/Kirby mash-ups using some of his creations from his time at DC. Here is the first one, I have a few more all-Kirby covers waiting in the wings as well.

I was happy to see Big Barda get a lot of screen time in the recent Superman/Batman: Apocalypse animated feature. Smallville is having a Darkseid-centric season this year, so maybe she will pop up there too. The Fourth World characters seem to still be in limbo at DC for the time being, but it's only a matter of time before they are dusted off and utilized again. Hopefully when that happens, Barda and Scott Free will be front and center.

Batman and Big Barda

This one was a request and I got lucky to find a picture of Barda that worked with this Batman cover. Well, OK there's no real reason for her to be at a hockey rink, but it does look like she is flinging pucks at Batman.

Most of Kirby's New Gods material didn't appeal to me as a kid, but the exception was Mr. Miracle. His escape artist identity was as cool as his more superheroic side. I was first exposed to him through his three B&B appearances and Barda appeared alongside, but never got solo billing. I have liked her portrayal on the Animated JLU series and I hope she and Scott Free are brought back to the forefront of the DCU soon.
