Hawkman and Doc Savage

Doc Savage is one of the biggest pulp characters that has never really been able to make the transition to live action.  I think there was some low budget attempt featuring ex-Tarzan Ron Ely, but other than that filmmakers seem to have steered clear of the property.  It's too bad, because I think that there is a great Indiana Jones type film to be be made with Doc Savage.  Casting might be a challenge, as you would need a action star type that could also convincingly portray Doc's intellect.

The Doc Savage movie of 1975 - produced by George Pal, of "The Time Machine" and "When Worlds Collide" fame - was actually a pretty decent little movie despite the fact that screenwriter Joe Morhaim decided to go with a camp approach similar to the Adam West "Batman" TV series. Ron Ely made a good Doc (and was an especially appropriate choice given his earlier role as Tarzan and Philip Jose Farmer's writings which show that the two heroes were in fact related). The film has its flaws but it has gone on to become a bona fide cult classic and is currently available on DVD through the Warner Archives collection.

Great name, and great look! Why do you think that have not been more attempts to put him in film. The Shdadow, The Phantom, John Carter, and Flash Gordon have all had thier shots. any thoughts?

Dave sez,

That's a great cover!
Too bad great characters can't generate great box office. Alec Baldwin was good as The Shadow, Billy Zane was decent as The Phantom, the guy from Battleship and Wolverine was great as John Carter, but the movies just didn't catch on for some reason...Flash Gordon was too campy, The Green Hornet was too Seth Rogan...hopefully this new Lone Ranger film will forever erase the Clinton Spillsbury debacle...

Two characters I've written on a great cover. But I'm really hoping Tuesday's cover features Prez.

Rats, I didn't even think to do a presidential themed cover...

Maybe for 2016 you could do Prez vs. Doctor Doom or something.

As to this one, I thought the Ron Ely movie was a shining example of mediocrity -- nothing great, nothing horrible, just kind of there. A new effort with (say) Adam Rodriguez would be great.

A nice team-up, by the way; if there's a modern superhero who would be "at home" in a pulp story, it's Hawkman.

I forgot that these guys were both archaeologists.
And there's no shortage of comics characters who ran for president, although except for Howard The Duck (in 1976), a lot of them were in comic strips first: Pogo (1952?), Snoopy (1968) and Zippy The Pinhead (who won in 1980, according to the strip).
