I really feel Dial 'H' for Hero is one of the most wasted concepts in the DC Universe.
Take all the characters designed who didn't make the cut to a full concept and try them out in H. See what sticks with readers.
If nothing else, we get really weird characters and powers that might never be seen otherwise.
Maybe the Dial could end up with a teen/tween. Not only do you tap into the Power Pack/Shazam/Prime motif, there's a ton of story potential.
The dial makes a different hero each time, which is a good parallel to being that age-everyday you're someone different than the day before as you grow and change into who you'll be.
Dial H for Hooray! It's Hercules! One of my favorite superheroes and Olympians.
I have to say, this actually made me laugh when I saw what you were doing.
I never noticed until now how well DC has tended to work with the linguistic side of magic: Dial "H," Shazam, Zatanna, Mxyzptlk, and others, all with some sort of anagram, backwards-speak, or other word-related twist.
I'm not sure what, if anything could be done with that. Maybe Captain Marvel or Zatanna could visit Sesame Street?
Great cover. It would be an instant purchase for me.
What if Dialing H one time got the dial stuck, and Herc kept appearing every time thereafter. Lots of fun possible exploring that I'd think - if only Marvel and DC could be persuaded to run with it.
They did the same with Thor once in one of the Incredible Hulk TV movies of the 1980's; or a badly nerfed version of him anyway.
Originally the dial did end up with a teen/tween. Robby Reed in the original series was only in his lower teens himself at the time, not an adult as he seems to be here. And he didn't summon heroes but rather turned into them himself temporarily. Loved that series as a kid when it was paired with adventures of Martian Manhunter in the (iirc) House of Mystery comics.
Congratulation on the 1st of the 5300s, 5301 is a great combination. All I can say three different arts that really work together great, a Jenson Dial "H" turning into a Bob Layton Hercules fighting a Howard Bender????.
You always default to Marvel's Herc. DC had a version too.
For all you fans of the original Robby Reed Dial H for Hero series, the TV series that we all wished for:

But then it would be all DC in this instance instead of a crossover like he usually likes to do. That's contrary to his style. If he uses DC Hercules, he'd have to find something else than Dial H For hero, which is also a DC property, to combine with him. And anyway Marvel used the Hercules figure way, way more than DC ever did, and much more consistently too.
I remember the Dial H reprints that were done as back-up stories for Superboy (before LSH took it over, post-Adventure Comics). A great concept! And the pre-Crisis exploits of Chris King and Vicki Grant were pretty good, too. As for today's cover? I can just imagine the word balloons on the cover.
Robby Reed: "Sockamagee! I must've dialed 'H-for-Herc' by mistake."
Hercules: "Face it, mortal. Thou hast hit the jackpot."
We definitely need more Sesame Street here, one way or the other! I know that so far we've had Super-Grover, Cookie Monster, Bert, Kermit the Frog, and I think that's it. The Yip-Yip Martians could definitely have been included in that all-Mars cover from the other day, and I could see Sherlock Hemlock getting involved with other detectives like Batman, the Question, Jessica Jones, or obviously his literary namesake at some point. Maybe Oscar the Grouch could meet Ragman sometime? Or the Count could meet Dracula some other related characters like Blade or Andrew Bennett, Big Bird and Mr. Snuffleupagus could meet Calvin and Hobbes, Barkley could meet some of the other dogs who have appeared here over the years, the list goes on…
Correction! I just looked, and as it turns out, the Count has appeared here, with Buffy! Guess I must have forgotten about that one, but my other suggestions still stand.
Now, if only we can have Mr. Universe versus Mangog.
@Anon216: please, no! I'd rather see Bizarro having a philosophical discussion with Master Yoda.
Suppose the dial gets stuck and keeps changing the hero with other heroes of the same name until fixed!! (Blue Beetle & Captain Marvel are beginners)!
I'd like to see Jimmy Olsen get a dial and 'Dial A for Action', with all of his Silver Age transformations occurring for that reason.
You mean from "Speed Demon" to "Ultra-Olsen"?
LOL! I just had a mental picture of Jimmy Olsen on a bicycle crossing the finish line ahead of both Spitfire and Jessie Quick.
to Carycomic _ Yes, and also Elastic Lad, Turtle Boy, Werewolf Jimmy, Agent 000... and wasn't he also a gorilla at one point?
@Simreeve: I believe you mean "Agent Double-5."
He was even a chorus girl, at one point! Understudy to some jealous showgirl gang moll named Maisie. If DC tried doing a one-shot that "light-hearted", today, they'd probably turn Maisie into a closet lesbian.
