Supergirl and Morbius

The Supergirl movie isn't far off, but there doesn't seem  like there is a lot of excitement for it.  Seeing Jason Mamoa as Lobo should be fun.  The trailers to me have been Just OK - The movie looks fine, just nothing that I feel that I need to run out and see. Hopefully the film will defy expectations and become a critical and commercial hit.

MORBIUS: "... now you will share my CURSE!"

SUPERGIRL: (*shrieks as she feels herself transforming into Jared Leto*)

I don’t have high hopes

The trailers have also made me feel ambivalent, at best. Because what little they've shown as Kara Zor-El as Linda Danvers make her too much like how the character was depicted in the comics just before she became a born-again "Earth Angel." In short? Too much like Sean Penn's Spiccoli from FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH (which is not entirely a good thing).

As for Morbius' word balloon on today's cover? Even in the Ross-verse that doesn't make sense! Morby was called "The Living Vampire" for a reason. He didn't get vampirized supernaturally. His literally bloodthirsty condition was the result of radical experiments in biochemistry and genetic engineering! So, the only way he might be able to pass on his "curse" to the Girl of Steel is if he imbibed from someone who was supernatural. Like, say, the Aztec warrior-princess Tlaca (presumably named for the Aztec god of thunder)?

Perhaps he tried to use red kryptonite as part of a cure, but it instead just made his condition transferrable to Kryptonians!

Now, hold on, Anon. Jared actually did pretty well in the Morbius movie. In fact, I consider it an underrated Halloween favorite, alongside New Mutants; both films straddle the line between superhero and horror quite nicely (though I'd grade NM at a D, vs. Morbius at a B-minus.)

The comic that the movie is based on is awesome.

Actually, I give KRAVEN the D and NM a C-plus (at worst).

@Aaron: Now, that does make sense! Given that Morbius' now-classic origin reveals that the reason for those radical experiments was some kind of terminal blood disease, it would be plot-plausible for him to become desperate enough to try iron supplements made from spent-kryptonite.*

*See SUPERMAN v.1/#233 ("Kryptonite Nevermore") from Jan. 1971.

P.S.---thanks, Ross, for resuming the Al Milgrom tribute.

The very first issue of SUPERMAN FAMILY I ever bought featured Supergirl's fight with Tlaca. I wonder if the government of Earth-1's Mexico ever sent its armed forces after that lost Aztec civilization (SG could have obtained its location from Tlaca by super-hypnosis).

@Aaron: still doesn't explain that lightning, though. So, I'd have to guess that he sucked a little blood from Max Dillon...who might've been serving as host body for his brother Roscoe's ghost!

@Kid Charlemagne: maybe Ross can depict that on a sequel cover. "Tlaca Contra El Relampago Viviente" ("Tlaca Vs. The Living Lightning")!

Or am I the only one who remembers erstwhile Avenger Miguel Santos (who has yet to even debut here)?

I am interested in the Supergirl movie, but not enough to pay current theater prices to see it. I will wait for streaming to view the movie.

I'll probably go see it in theaters out of morbid curiosity. But, the Peanut M&M's better still be cheaper than the price of an adult's matinee ticket!

Supergirl as a party animal was so different than the comics ...Supe's description of her...not expecting a lot of fan support on this.

Which is probably why they're waiting a whole month before releasing it. Warner Discovery doesn't want it bombing at the box office so early in the season. That would make it a lackluster rather than a blockbuster.
