There have been some false alarms over the years, but Mar-Vell remains one of the few heroes to die in comics and remain dead, even decades later. I am glad that the integrity of his story has been kept intact - but I wouldn't mind seeing some new stories featuring him in flashback tales from his prime.

This is an absolutely brilliant notion Ross. If this STF issue actually existed it would fly off the shelves so fast it'd be near impossible to lay your hands a copy. If anyone could bring the original Captain Marvel (Marvel) back, then it would be Swampy.
I've never really forgiven Marvel for bumping him off (and seemingly permanently) all those years ago. It started - IMO - an unwelcome trend - Supergirl and Barry Allen Flash followed.
But they - and Superman - eventually made it back. So why not Mar-Vell?
@Davejonz: if this were an actual comic story, I would guess that the Swamp Thing plans to make a phyto-genetic clone of Mar-Vell. The same thing that the Elder Cotati did for the Swordsman on behalf of the original Mantis. That is, the kick-butt Eurasian martial artist from the 1970's!. Not the fortune-telling concubine from outer space.
Mar-Vell will remain dead and Aunt May will never die.
Amen Anon 9:03. Well, I didn't want to reopen this old wound, but I applaud the resolution of whoever is in charge of Marvel these days to let Mar-Vell remain in the ranks of Comicdom's honored dead. Jim Starlin's graphic novel was based on his experiences during his father's last days with cancer, so the finality of the end of Mar-Vell's life is treated with due seriousness, and artistic genius. The irony of Mar-Vell dying in bed, after all the danger and risk he faced as a superhero, has a dark brilliance. For me, the Captain Marvel comic suffered drastically after Starlin left it, so I can the appreciate the need for other characters to take up the name of Captain Marvel. (Sorry DC.) Overall, I think the "deaths" and rebirths of key superhero properties has mainly become a marketing gimmick used to boost sales. But this still is an intriguing cover Ross. This, and The Spectre and Sub-Mariner cover have a groovy macabre Halloween spirit going. I'm waiting for a smashing Trick or Treat tomorrow!

Since cancer killed the Captain, you would believe that there was some alien tech that could clean the Captain before it was too late. Any clones would still have the cancer as well. But other multiverses might still have that Captain available.
That would be Marvel Earth-906, I believe.
There should be a title at both companies (Marvel and DC) to tell 'lost' stories of dead characters. Like "Marvel Tales" or "DC History". Then perhaps death would have more meaning. And imagine all the storytelling possibilities, not only of the dead heroes themselves, but also modern creators being able to tackle a hero for an issue or three that they missed out on.
But could the writers do it without messing up continuity?
@Carycomic: If you're referring to the MCU version played by Pom Kiementieff, she's an empathic psychic. Not a fortune teller! Nor is she as mild-mannered as she might seem at first glance.
Mar-Vell had a guest appearance with the Silver Surfer when he had to enter the Land of the Dead. To Ken's point, it would be cool if the publishers had a Land of the Dead series, like something out of Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride where the departed heroes could party in their own Valhallas. Happy Halloween gang!

My suspicion here is that Swampy's efforts would be successful, but only temporary.
Speaking of temporary returns from the dead, I don't think Mar-Vell has yet been summoned by Kid Eternity.

Now you got me thinking of Peter Parker convincing Kid Eternity to bring back Uncle Ben for a day, just so Peter can finally have some closure with him.

Kid Eternity should help out the Hulk who has lost so many friends & lovers. Jarella & Jim Wilson come to mind.
