I'm in a golden age mood today, so Barry Allen and the Avengers' resident synthezoid will have to sit this one out. Their predecessors can take over this case.

Mephisto was just getting started in this time, on this world...and boy was he enjoying himself. These heroes were new to the job and he was laughing how easy everything was. It's what the heroes don't know yet. Fantastic.
Personally, if the Golden Age Vision is involved, then the secret to these crooks' success must be...the Book of Destiny!
Time for Toni Stark* and the Challengers of the Unknown.
*She was the co-pilot/partner/love interest of swashbuckling time traveler Ace Buckley for Pines Publishing (aka Better/Popular/Nedor Comics). Presumably her first name was short for "Antoinette"!
P.S.---my first choice for bringing the Challs back to the Forties would've been Rip Hunter. But, Ross understandably prefers counter-balancing DC characters with those of other comic publishers. And Toni Stark is a Golden Ager somewhat in the public domain. Plus, there are lots of Internet image captures of her wearing a very eye-catching red one-piece swimsuit (rowr-rowr)!
@Cary Google didn't tell me anything about this Toni Stark you're describing, but it did show me that Tony/Iron Man has a sister with that exact name (even short for Antoinette) who worked for SHIELD, and, strangely enough... a lawyer from the show Degrassi!
This story would be perfect for a "twisted" ending -- one where the "destined" win does happen, but the crooks end up paying a price.
@Ben W: Consult the websites "Public Domain Superheroes" and "International Catalogue of Superheroes".
You could also try googling Comic Vine under "Ace Buckley" (her boyfriend).
@Carycomic: found her at both places. Thanks!
