Zatanna and The Spirit

When Warner Bros. brought on JJ Abrams to revamp the DCU, he seemed to have big plans for Zatanna.  I heard rumors of her leading up a Justice League Dark team or even being featured in a solo movie of her own.  Nothing much came of the Abrams partnership, and now James Gunn and Peter Safran are heading up the DCU.  I haven't seen him mention Zatanna in his plans yet, but I hope she is in the mix.

Whoa! Interesting cover! What happens next?

More and more I'm just sad and disappointed by DC's live action. I wonder sometimes if anyone really has a plan or knows what they're doing.

The Arrowverse seemed to make sense. However, the decision was made to separate the small screen from the big screen. Maybe the new duo will wipe the slate clean and start fresh... the only problem with that, is there's still a sour taste from all the misfires. Plus, Marvel is already into Phase 5, while DC is still doing a lot of head-scratching. Love the charactersm just wish they were getting better service...

I never thought I'd jealous of a shrunken Dennis Colt LOL!

Is this a variation of the Impulse cover?

It doesn't help that Safran himself is personally responsible for, at the least, one of the biggest misfires in WB history. Until he either acknowledges that or is tossed, I still won't waste any of my money on DC movies, or on HBO Max (though Doctor Who being there does tempt me). And I'm not holding my breath for either of those two things to happen.

This cover, though, is a very fun blending of images. I'd be interested to read it, just to find out how this image figures in to a story with that title (whether literally or symbolically).

@Bob: I like to think that Zatanna was manipulated into capturing him on behalf of his version of Talia Al Ghul. As in, the femme fatale who kept him--quite literally--a prisoner of her "love," for two years, during DC's recent adaptation of the Spirit.

?? i thought it is Disney that is going to have Dr Who on their listings. Hbo max, now MAX(??) was to have WB DC that may have been since aborted.

Plan to put Superman back in front? Sounds nice, but you need good writers, director, and actors to make something people respond to in a good way. Having a Pa Kent who is concerned more for protecting Clark's secret id than lives that may be lost in an immediate emergency is not a great symbol/example to look to.

As to this cover, yeah, i do prefer the Zatanna that was more in top form for being on stage than some of these younger models DC has had. The Spirit has teamed with Batman, so teaming with Zantanna, that should be a great read. Thanks, Ross.

Zatanna can be one of the most entertaining characters dc has,
she can be used in a mass of varieties of ways and has been… a adventure with the spirit drawn by Brian Bolland would be top hat notch….
wait and get the Dr. Who on blu-ray it’s worth it for the extras ( i have been watching since november 1963 / first episode )

@Anon1042: if you're referring to the year-long mini-series that introduced the characters called Sachet Spice and Mikado Vaas, that wasn't DC. That was DE(Dynamite Entertainment)!

@Tobor: It would be fantastic and brilliant (to borrow a couple of good adjectives) if Doctor Who were to move from HBO Max to Disney+; then I wouldn't feel so conflicted, plus I'd be able to watch it with streaming subtitles rather than the dodgy, and often hard-to-read, closed-captioning.

@Simon: Classic Who is on BritBox, though apparently only two Doctors at a time (the last I checked, it was the 3rd and 4th).

I'll say that the Octopus lured the Spirit onto a skillfully built movie set with giant props. And Zatanna simply goes along with the deceit to defeat the villain.

Bob Greenwade said...

@Tobor: I hadn't heard that it wasn't moving; just, when I do a search for where to stream it, HBO Max is what comes up. I find the news of its move to Disney+ to be most excellent, since I already subscribe!

@Ken Roskos: Unless, of course, it's the real Zee who's captured The Octopus _posing_ as The Spirit!

Because that's what made the villain so formidable in the comic strip. Nobody knew what he really looked like! The readers, themselves, only ever saw hands folded authoritatively on some desk top. And, when that wasn't enough, he was depicted by Will Eisner as impersonating someone else by wearing some kind of IMF-style mask.

The fact that movie-goers knew that SLJ was The Octopus, right from the start, is probably why the Spirit feature film more-or-less tanked at the box office.
