Black Goliath and The Justice League of America

Ever since Laurence Fishburne was introduced in the MCU as Bill Foster, I have been hoping that we would get a flashback scene of his superheroic days. It seems that I may get my wish - sort of.  Recent interviews have hinted that we will indeed see a giant-sized Bill Foster in the future, but in animated form.  The next season of What If? is supposed to feature just such a scenario.  Of course, with most of Marvel's upcoming projects having their release dates pushed back, who knows when it will actually hit the airwaves?

ever since JLA #5, when Green Lantern was replaced by a fake, there has been a need for better security there. So many possibilities. Want to see how the substitution was done. Something to look forward to with What If.

poor old Bill , they enjoyed killing him, 2nd rate artwork in his comic, and a worse script, maybe a adventure with the J.L.A. would end his run of exceptional bad luck…

WHOA!!!

This is the one I was telling Tobor about the other day. Adventure Comics v.1/#423! But, of course, as this is Earth-STF, it's not an ET Wolf Larson who's mind-controlling (or, in this case, impersonating) Superman. More likely a Space Phantom or renegade Durlan. Maybe even a pre-IDW Dire Wraith!

@Anon853: why couldn't it simply be one of the Totalitarians? Like, say, Composite Superman using Chameleon Boy's power; or Amazo using Batman's mastery of disguise*; or even Super Skrull using the innate metamorphic abilities of his people!

*Add Flash's super-speed to that skill set and you've got a _real_ quick-change artist.

And let's face it. It's been seven years since their first-and-thus-far-only appearance. STF #1380.

"Let those who wish a blue highlight summon Bob Greenwade...with all their might!"

Detective Tobor: I was going to cite that very story.

@Carycomic: I now have visions of BG, cosplaying as Hal Jordan, dancing in my head. Thank you, _so much_, for that mental imagery!

We could even get Laurence Fishburne as a giant-sized, non-youthened Bill Foster in The Kang Dynasty and/or Secret Wars -- or even an upcoming season of Loki. I'm certain that he'd be up for it; he's executive producer of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and arranged for a Bill Foster cameo in one episode (to say nothing of unrecognizably voicing the Beyonder).

@Anon@8:53: My first thought for identifying the imposter, almost immediately upon seeing the cover, was a Skrull taking Green Arrow's place.

@Cary & Anon@11:24: I actually do have a Blue Lantern (original character) cosplay on my to-do list. It's pretty low-priority, though, as I'm waiting for them to dispense with She Who Must Not Be Named (which may be a moot point by now, as she's reportedly given up on Hollywood and moved to Spain). Also, I don't think Hal would be my GL cosplay of choice; more likely, either Tomar-Re or G'Nort.

Just had a horrible thought: Gnort Gneesmacher captured and "trained" by Granny Goodness as one of Darkseid's Dogs of War.

Great cover! Great premise!

Bob Greenwade said...

@Cary: Even less comforting would be if Granny were to turn the Road Rovers into the Dogs of War.

But since Ross already has Ace and the Dogs of War, what if he had to rescue them from Granny Goodness?

The short-lived Black Goliath series from the 70's was really great.

@Bob Greenwade: maybe with a little help from Animal Man and the Pet Avengers?

Bob Greenwade said...

@Cary: More likely, a little help from Ace Ventura.

@Bob & Cary: Actually, Ace Ventura would be better off teamed up, one on one, with Animal Man (imho).

@Anon@3:22: I like the name synchronicity between Ace and Ace. One could even throw in Ms. Dorothy McClure, and possibly Capt. Brad J. Armbruster*; then you'd have four Aces. All that's left would be a King... or a Joker.

*From Doctor Who and G. I. Joe, respectively.

As in, the Clown Prince of Crime vs. Yomiko Readmon's boss?

Bob Greenwade said...

@Cary: Having never heard of Read or Die until five minutes ago, I was referring to Batman's Special Friend.

PS: I actually was thinking of his Tangent Universe counterpart(s), though I doubt Ross would use her.

Hmmmm! Given that the Tangent Joker is supposed to be Atlantean, who would you prefer to play Lori Lemaris? The one who plays Duela Dent on "Gotham Knights;" or by She Who Must Be Heard Rather Than Seen?
