One of the best parts of John Ostrander's 90's Spectre series was the exploration of Jim Corrigan's early years. I could see Dick Tracy fitting right in with those pre-Spectre tales, so a story like this might not be as far fetched as it might initially seem. I'd read it, anyway.

"Far-fetched" is putting it mildly. I mean, even in a genuine Golden Age story from the real-world 1940's, I don't think any editor in their right mind would believe Dick Tracy perceptive enough to pierce the supernatural disguise of the Spectre to recognize the once-mortal persona beneath! Not unless this was set during Corrigan's rookie period as the Angel of Vengeance.
Meaning he doled out vigilante justice while unconsciously demonstrating some of the same mannerisms as Corrigan. Overconfidently assuming that Tracy wouldn't recognize such forces of habit.
A brilliant linking of these two characters. I'd never have thought of it in the proverbial million years, but now it's there for all to see in an STF cover it just seems...glaringly obvious.
You realize, of course, Tracy, that you don't have a ghost of a chance of bringing him in.
"So, Tracy, how'd you figure out that the Corrigan was the Spectre?"
"It was easy, Sam. He told me."
Sometimes it's easy to forget certain aspects of heroes' backgrounds, but someone sharp (that's you in this case, Ross) finds something and runs with it. It's kind of like if Ben Parker was buried in the same cemetery as Thomas and Martha Wayne (which, now that I think of it, might make a decent story seed). It's also brought us some great ongoing pairings such as the Power Couple, the Danvers Twins, and the Strange Brothers (among others). It's also why I'm wanting to see more of Dr. Strange and Dr. Mid-Nite working together.
A pairing of Miles Morales with Beth Chapel would be interesting too.
I must echo what has been said. I never thought of this pairing, and I like to think about what I would consider odd pairings. But then, when you talk about that series exploring Corrigan's early years, and how Tracy would fit in, it doesn't seem so odd after all. Odd or not, I think that this is a great pairing, a story that I would love to read. Thanks again, Ross, for bringing this pleasure to us daily. I look forward every day to seeing what is in store.
This is so great for so many reasons.
What everyone said. The potential here is subtle and vast at the same time. One plot point could show the Spectre being forced to do some down to earth sleuthing without using his powers(for fear of upsetting some delicate cosmic balance).
In turn, this might require Dick Tracy to take on some macabre, supernatural threat, perhaps while developing latent mystic powers on his own!(temporarily at least.)
The theme and period styles are just right!
Ken has a pretty good idea, there. And the common enemy that best fits that bill, I think, is that Godzilla-sized Skrull impersonator (from Golden Age publisher Lev Gleason); THE CLAW!

What if Tracey, rather than Corrigan, had become the Spectre?
He'd probably wind up with Will Eisner's Denny Colt on his trail. Talk about a Spirited confrontation!

Hmm! Good angle Simreeve. Tracy's relationships with Moonmaid, Junior and the rest would have been more strenuous. Meanwhile, now that I think about it, Corrigan's old detective skills would come right back, while Tracy would be fighting for his life if they had to change places.
