Green Lantern and Power Man

HBO Max has finally made a casting announcement for the upcoming Green Lantern Corps series.  Finn Witrock will be playing Guy Gardner.  I am unfamiliar with his work, but I hope he has the swagger to play Guy.  I wish he had red hair or at least lighter hair that could be colored red, but I'm not surprised that he doesn't.  The de-gingering of the live action DCU has been going on for a while now. We demand representation!

I always liked John Byrne's rendition of Green Lantern, and wish that he had worked on hat property more often.  Here's a Byrne Spider-Man: Chapter One page I picked up a while back:

Think I saw this story in one of the Crisis books. Captured hero made into a power battery. For example, next time, try making his life force the only thing keeping a dying heroine alive.

Ditko would not have felt Byrne'd by John's work.

Could be worse, Ross. They might decide to Afro-Americanize him, a la Jimmy Olsen on SUPERGIRL, and give you a Guy Gardner/John Stewart amalgam!

"Stewart Gardner?!" Yeah, I reluctantly have to agree.

That definitely has a more dignified ring to it. ;-)

Courage, my man. At least you have some sort of representation. Between Marvel and DC, the only honestly autistic character* -- counting supporting cast -- has been Johnny Do, whose title (Psi-Force) was discontinued over two decades ago. Other than him, we have only Billy Cranston, the Blue Ranger, in the 2017 Power Rangers film.

*Hint: any mention of a "cure" is not an honest portrayal.

Slightly off-topic: who's the villain on today's cover? That 4-D Man from Thor's "Quest for the Living God-jewel" story arc?

It's Bushmaster.

Have you ever checked out the character Gary from the tragically short lived original live action super hero show Alphas?

Bob Greenwade said...

@Steve: Totally. Ryan Cartwright was brilliant, taking on not only autism but an American accent. And Gary has my favorite-ever comeback from an autistic character, when a bully called him "retarded": "I'm not retarded; I'm autistic. You're retarded." (Granted, it's not super creative, but it's more than I've ever been able to come up with.) And yeah, he sort of counts as a superhero, albeit a "plainclothes" sort of way (like Steve Austin and the Misfits of Science).

I believe that the "de-gingering" of the live action DC Universe began with the casting of Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang on the TV show Smallville.

Once that proved successful, then the de-gingerfication process was on and no character was safe!

* You are aware James became Ms Jamie Olsen in "B vs S"?
* How much like Riverdale's Archie do you want gingers to be?1
* Is Batwoman still a Super Friend?

Boycott LADCU! Representation for all hair colors!

Daviticus has a good point. Plus, the only character to remain red-headed is Mera, who is played by Amber Heard -- and that's just adding injury to insult.

Maybe Ross could help her and Natasha "the Black Widow" Romanoff do something about that. A super-group called "The League of Ambitious Redheads" (or something like that).

I'd prefer "The Young Ginger Snappers."

Ah, ya might want ta call a CODE:RED.

Code:Blue might sue for plagiarism. :-)

Forget Sue. She's not a ginger. Check the labels for the Code:Red!

@Triple H: Ah, yes! Now, I understand the subtle nuances of your earlier missives. Bu, then again; if Ross could depict them fighting among themselves because of the Psycho-Pirate, maybe he could entitle it...

"When Gingers Snap!"
