I always considered Solomon Grundy to be as much plant-being as zombie.
Cary's got it right: Grundy, as I recall, was originally a foe of the Golden Age Green Lantern, and only later became a Batman foe. As a plant-creature, Alan's GL ring couldn't affect him directly, as it was as ineffective against wood as the Corps' rings later were against the color yellow, and Grundy had enough wood to him to count.
Only since Crisis on Infinite Earths has Grundy become a regular Batman foe, and of course since Alan was written out of continuity he's more associated with Bruce.
Since Doctor Strange is also on the cover, I've been paying attention to news about Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness -- in particular, the suggestion that we may have a scene where he and Tony Stark trade power sets, in a What If...?-styled alternate-universe scenario using unused/deleted scene footage from Infinity War. I mention What If...? because that swap has happened in separate stories in that title; it'll be interesting (if it does happen) to see it on the big screen.
Bringing all (well, most) of the above together, looking at the picture I'm envisioning Strange with Alan Scott's ring. It might be fun to see such a situation, teamed up with Iron Beetle! (They could be doing a multiverse search for Alan, to return the ring. If Iron Beetle's going to be teamed with a GL regularly, I'd rather it was Matt Murdock.)
PS: It's been a while since we've seen Fin Fang Foom on these pages. A battle with Godzilla would seem quite his style. Or, you could have him opposed by the Inferior Five.
Makes me think a Defenders/ JLU Faux Defenders X-Over would one to consider. Dr. Strange, Namor, Hulk, the Silver Surfer, Valkyrie, Nighthawk vs (then w/) Dr. Fate, Aquaman, Sol. Grundy, Superman, Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl.
I am exciting to see a more comics accurate Grundy. I didn't see the one on Gotham, but the portrayal of Grundy on Arrow was terrible.
I'm old as dirt and have the Showcase issues with the JSA. It was pretty harsh that GL put SG into a bubble and floated him off into space. In James Robinson's STARMAN, they find him living on that odd planet and I realized that, yep,it wasn't like SG circled the moon and camne back to Earth.
So pretty rough, Alan Scott!
Wayne Allen Sallee, as another dirt old guy, I have to say, those Golden Age, '40s, noir heroes were pretty tough on crime! They didn't fool around!
In Swamp Thing #67 it was revealed that Solomon Grundy was a failed plant elemental.
Yep, in the pre-Comics Code days, the heroes could get pretty rough on criminals. Even so, Alan's actions in tossing Grundy into space could still be ruled justified, given how much of a threat the big guy was even then. I mean, a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do!
Say, seeing as how a certain Marvel character also suffered the fate of having been shot into space against his will, that might make for a fun rematch between Solomon Grundy and the Hulk!
