Batman and Solar: Man of the Atom

Are we going to have a skinny Batman?  Robert Pattinson posted some recent pics of himself, and it does indeed look like his figure is still rather slight, despite filming being at least a third the way completed for the new movie.  Maybe, the suit will help the appearance of his physique.  I've always liked director Matt Reeves' visual style, so I still have hope that the Caped Crusader will look appropriately cool.

I see what you did there.
Well played. Well played.

The early Doctor Solar issues from Gold Key, when Newman and Fujitani had control of it, those are some of the best comic books ever created. And the revivals have been praiseworthy attempts to recapture the promise of those first issues. Thanks for reminding us of the character!

#1-Well played indeed even if it took me a minute to get.

#2-Solar is good example of an old character getting a new life and being even better than before.

#3-Am I the only one eyerolling over seeing Batman becoming Iron Man? Just give him powers already.

I actually had never heard of Solar before this. He looks interesting. The "Man of the Atom" sub-name makes me think he should be connected to the X-Men somehow, though.

As for the joke... I don't even perceive it. Hopefully what I'm missing is a pop-culture reference and not a pun; in the latter case, I'll be rather embarrassed.

It does seem to me that a skinny Bruce Wayne and a burly Batman would be a good help in maintaining that Secret Identity. The pictures of the Bat-suit that I've seen don't quite go to the latter, but they're enough in that general direction that I'd be fooled.

@MHS: I generally see Batman holding those heavily-armored Bat-suits for special occasions. It's for good reason, too, even if it's never been said explicitly: the protection comes at the cost of agility and touch-based environmental sense, both of which are vital to Batman's usual style (the latter -- sensing subtle changes in temperature and air movement -- is how he can thwak someone trying to sneak up on him from behind). It did not escape my notice in Batman v. Superman that, after Bats gave up on fighting Supes, he switched to a more conventional Bat-suit.

The word balloon refers to the original Bat-movie from 1966. Adam West, as Batman, is trying to dispose of one of those cannonball bombs with the dynamite-style fuse. But, every place he tries, there's some innocent person or thing in the way.* Prompting him to quip... "Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb!"

Fortunately, however, he did find a vacancy somewhere along the Gotham City waterfront.

Bruce Wayne (Hush) in Batwoman 2020 - 2021 according to the last episode this season.

Having the original Solar is great. How about he meets Dr Manhattan?

@Los Thunderlads: Maybe Magnus, Robot Fighter, another Gold Key hero, could face Rosemary "Rosie the Robot" Jetson from "The Jetsons" (2017); "Rosie was once human, like Magnus is.

interesting cover, almost looks like it's in deep space.

If you cross the streams, could you interact Solar with Dr Strange?

@Bob G: wasn't that what they did with the Mike K.,1989 movie bat suit? Used to show why he's better off using it than not.

@Cary: Thanks! It's been long enough since I've seen that movie that I'll give myself a pass on not recognizing it. (I'd give about 50/50 chance that the line was Adam's own idea.)

@Horsefeathers: I'm not sure what you're referring to (too many pronouns in your response).

1989. Michael Keaton - Star of The Batman movie and Batman Returns. His costume was designed to show how much more intimidating he could be in it compared to doing things out of costume.

I do find it ironic that we're getting this the day after Ross praised Bouncing Boy for being "a rare hero that was not in body builder shape." ;)

Is Batman wearing a cape on his spacesuit?!

Or is that just an asteroid he's being flung into, back-first?

Bob Greenwade said...

@Horsefeathers: OK, that's much clearer. Yes, somewhat; I think, more to the point, about how the cowl pushed his chin forward to change the look of his face, so that not only did Batman not look like Bruce Wayne, but he looked like he couldn't be Bruce Wayne. Similarly, the hood on Ruby Rose's Batwoman suit rounds her head, and while it looks more artificial than that touch on the Keaton Batsuit it still changes the look of her face to something much different.
