Batman and He-Man

He-Man and The Masters of the Universe started to hit it big after I had stopped regularly watching cartoons, but this is an animated crossover that I would have definitely been there for.  Having seen them team up with Superman in their DC Comics Presents debut, I figured at first that MOTU was a DC property anyway, so such a tv special wouldn't have seemed completely out of the blue to me.

Not Really a fan of MOTU. A redressed Red Skull vs a"steve rogers" given powers thru magic. What a unique idea to work to.

A not-unreasonable assumption to make. DC did have a limited licensing right to publishing a certain version of the character, just prior to Dark Horse getting it in 2021. And, at roughly the same time Filmation had this cartoon in first-run syndication, they had more-or-less sold their 1960's cartoon versions of the DC superheros back to Time-Warner...who started showing them on USA Network.*

*At least, that's what resulted through my cable TV provider at the time.

@Tobor: Wasn't it George Carlin who once said that there are only three original ideas floating around Hollywood at any one time?

Back 2 Ross for a second: that awesome pole-swing kick the Batman is in the middle of! Is that from the 1968 Filmation series or the much-more recent "Brave & The Bold" series?

Filmation.

Great synchronicity, then! :-)

Ever seen this commercial?

Now I kinda want to see He-Man and Dazzler team up. ;)

Tobor's remark just screams for a He-Man/Captain America team-up, versus Skeletor and Red Skull. Or, those two villains could recruit Atomic Skull and a couple of others into a network of skull-headed villains.

@Bob Greenwade: With Mr. Bones as a double-agent for Amanda Waller?

DC did make the second series of mini-comics that came with the action figures, which led to the Superman crossover Ross mentioned and a three issue miniseries that is actually responsible for some of Filmation's changes. For example, where Marlena was introduced by name and coming from Earth, the secret identities of Prince Adam and Cringer, who used a magic cave to transform and visit the Goddess. Filmation changed the splitting sword gimmick because they used it in a previous show, Blackstar.

Meanwhile DC itself has ties to Filmation. When they decided to start producing their own shows instead of just doing animation for someone else's studio they wanted to do Superman, but needed the money to set up a proper distribution studio. So they essentially tricked DC into believing they were already ready, and used the license money to fully set up. I always find that story fascinating.

@Bob G, you know that network would never work. It would just go to their head.

@Carycomic, there are only two. It's a question of how you shuffle them that makes the "third".

@Anon@11:18: And possibly with Mr. Skullhead on hand to point out how the group is a Bad Idea.

@Bob Greenwade: He'd be more like a "silent partner."

@DT: and Hollywood is notorious for some pretty fast shuffling. ;-D

@Big Mike: always expect the unexpected.

@Cary: Unless it's the Spanish Inquisition. Nobody expects that.
