The Magnificent Misters

When Bob Greenwade, a Patron of this Blog, suggested bringing back the trio of Misters from way back in STF #78 and adding in Mr. Majestic, I thought it was a good idea.  I decided to go one step further and add in Mister Miracle to make it a full team.  Let's just hope that The Expansion Team and The Roustabouts don't mind having their members poached for this self-loving assemblage!

I'd have included Mister Immortal, but I'm partial to the Great Lakes (Insert Team Name Here)

What is it about your teams? Each one has just that extra helping of Super-team magic.
And this one looks great. Not sure about the name though. You should have gone with the Mistery Men.
Of course, very non PC. You need an all female group for balance.
Also, have you ever teamed the various Captains?
Now I'm off to check out the earlier appearances. Thanks for including the links.

I checked them out. Great. But Mr Gum is going to be very ticked off with his teammate, Reed Richards, at not be included in the Mistery Men. What's the matter? Couldn't you stretch the team enough to include him?

Daviticus said...

@Davejonz: He did a "Captains Marvel" cover once (#1610).

This is an inspired idea and a fun cover, but where is Mister Monster?!?!

Too bad you didn't include Adam Strange. Why not? I guess that will just remain a Mister-y in Space.

Ross said...

Mr. Gum and Mr. Monster don't fit here - Having Mister in your name isn't enough, the second part of the name has to be a bit narcissistic.

Mr Mind, Mr Mxyzptlk, Mr Freeze, Mr Hyde, Mr Negative, Mr E and Mr Magoo salute you.

Ross said...

None of those are braggy enough - unless Mr. E stands for Mr. Excellent...

That would be Miss Marvel

might i suggest the....
(drum roll, please....)
Self-Aggrandisizing Gang!!!
...yeah, i know it is something
of mouthful, however it is accurate....
or an alternate suggestion, the
Mr.y Men so as not to infringe on The Mystery Men from Flaming Carrot comic books and one very funny live action movie....
...or perhaps this group should battle that group ,on a cover by yourself, for the right to use the name.....
The Mystery Men....
mere suggestions of course....

Thanks for the clarification. Now I'm even more impressed by your amazing ability to concoct such a glorious group!

Awesome! I do so love it when someone runs with an idea of mine.

A friend of mine once had a couple of Champions PCs (from two separate games) named Mister Wonderful and Mister Nice Guy. Either would've fit right in here if he'd ever gotten them published -- though Mister Nice Guy would've been the team's resident "loose cannon."

How about doing one of doctors. I know you've done Drs. Fate and Strange, but there are other docs out there. Team name: The Medical Association.

You need Ms Marvel. Miss Martian, Miss America, Miss Fury, Miss Victory, Miss Patriot, and Miss Fear as The Hitter Misses.

Continuing: While Mistery Men may step on some toes, Confidence Men is still descriptive... though I really can't see this group actually choosing either name. However, I could see Michael Holt having enough of a sense of humor to suggest Magnificent Misters, and the others deciding to run with it.

Another thought occurs to me: The Shadows of Mr. E -- a sort of "non-team" in the tradition of the Defenders. Mr. E wouldn't be so much a leader, as a central figure who works with the others; those others are all enigmatic figures who show up unexpectedly when they're needed. Fellow DC personage Phantom Stranger and Marvel's Madame Web would probably be a part of things. Tuxedo Mask (from Sailor Moon might show up to lend a hand. I'm not sure who else would be a part of things.

@emsley: As far as I know, Dr. Strange and Dr. Mid-Nite are the only "Doctors" in comics who are actual MDs. And they've met (another idea from yours truly).

As for the poaching from other teams, Wolverine and Batman have both been on multiple teams multiple times, so "sitting in" with another group shouldn't be a problem. But I don't think this group would have a poker night (the math would be too simplistic for Fantastic and Terrific, Miracle could change the cards whenever he wanted, Majestic could pick up the internal tells, and Incredible can't afford it) so I wonder what they would play?

Bob Greenwade said...

@Jay: Monopoly, perhaps?

jack-el said...

...or this team under whatever name could fight their counterparts....
Mr. Fear, Mr. Monster and Mr. Sinister....
...and there must be a few more with dark or evil "Mr." names, but right now i can't think of any more.....
a FUN cover, Ross, i would buy it....

@ Sweet Tooth: Don't forget the "Mrs." team; maybe including Mrs. T (Mr. T's wife), if an image is available; also (tongue-in-cheek) Mrs. T of pierogie fame.

@Sweet Tooth: Maybe an Aunts team: Aunt May, etc.; maybe even Aunt Jemima (with humor (non-racist, I think) like a crack about Mr. T's pierogies), LOL! XD!

Now I’m wanting a revelation that “Mxyzptlk” is the 5th Dimensional word for Excellence and he demands membership

I think a team up of Mr E, Mr T, Mr A, and Mr X as thecLetter People would spell disaster for their enemies;)

@Bob G.: Doctor Fate, too. Kent Nelson got his medical degree in More Fun Comics #85 (1942), though he went back to archaeology in the seventies. He was a practicing surgeon when he teamed up with Superman in World's Finest #208.

Bob Greenwade said...

@Other Bob: I think that's been pointed out to me before, and I keep forgetting. I think that, technically, we can also count Doc Samson, though he's a psychiatrist. The real challenge would be to find an MD outside the Big Two, who uses "Doctor" in his (or her) superhero name.

Just checked out the Roustabouts. Couldn't the Swordsman be a member? Didn't he have some circus history with Clint Barton?

Their first case? Finding and arresting Catwoman who's just stolen the voices of the rock group...Mr. Mister!

Reg Aubry said...

Hey, quick question. Have the Sea Devils ever teamed up with the Challengers of the Unknown? Because that's a lot of purple....

Ross said...

Both DC so not here, Reg - but maybe somewhere in actual continuity?

Anonymous said...

Reg, the Sea Devils met the Challengers of the Unknown (not to mention the Secret Six and Cave Carson) in DC’s recent, brilliant Scooby Doo Team Up series written by Sholly Fisch. The internet tells me that they first met back in 1958 in Challengers of the Unknown number 51, but that was before my time.

Isaac said...

You forgot Aunt Harriet!

Carycomic said...

@Ross, Reg, and Anon: didn't they also meet in some hundred-page giant spectacular, back in the mid-Eighties, commemorating the 30th anniversary of DC SHOWCASE? Hence, it featured everybody who had ever debuted in that Silver Age publication. Including not only the Sea Devils, but also half the JLA, Adam Strange, Space Ranger, Bat Lash, and even Angel & The Ape!

Glenn said...

The teams next foe should be Mr. Mxyzptlk.

Carycomic said...

Or, better yet, Mr. Mind!

Reg Aubry said...

Ah, you're right - I downloaded Challengers of the Unknown from Library Genesis and sure enough, Sea Devils meet up with the Challengers of the Unknown, but - no fair! - the Challengers are in their new yellow and red outfits, not their old purple ones! Boooooo! (lol).

Anyway, thanks for the various heads up. I wasn't a regular reader of those teams at that time, but I'd flip through them on the shelf sometimes.

@Carycomic: close, but no cigar. SHOWCASE Number 100 was published in May of 1978!

Carycomic said...

Ah, yes! Thanks for the update.

You forgot Steve Ditko's Controversial classic Mr E. And Dc's Mr E. (No relation maybe.), Mister X.
