The Metal Men and Magneto

Every once in a while we will see a new updated version of the Metal Men, with their appearances redesigned to look more modern or "bad ass".  Usually that means more bulky looks, with sharper edges and extraneous parts.  Those changes never seem to last and they return to their classic streamlined designs.  Sometimes the original look is the best, and this is one of those cases.

A big thank you to David Welsh, a Patron of this Blog, for suggesting this team up!

Simple, effective and feels so right. Totally agree about the non need of updating.

Reminds me of Magneto and the Metal Men from the Amalgam Universe? Still another awesome cover.

I really like the cover and the team up combination. But... here goes some quibbling...(and I just looked this science stuff up)
Magneto's power will work powerfully on Iron. It'll only have a tiny, tiny effect on Gold and Lead. And presumably zero on the other team members. So how has Magneto taken over? Charm?
Blast! I suppose I'll have to buy the comic to find out!

I thought Amalgam Comic team-ups were verboten, here.

Personally? I like this! Now, if tomorrow's team-up could feature Spidey and Detective Chimp, my week would be complete. :-)

Doc's going to have to do some work to show his "children" that they're making a big mistake. Either that, or he'll have to become Doc Magnus, Robot Fighter.

Interesting thought: team up Platinum with Jocasta. Similar looks, and all that.

They've met on the blog.

@Carycomic: who would they team up against? Commanda and Cygor?

How about Shrapnel and Jocasta?

Very true. Their original appearance is iconic, and I've never seen it actually improved upon.

I agree 100% Streamlined is best. It makes me think of those ridiculous throat "V"s that DC put at the collars of most New52 costumes, as well as all the extra lines in their costumes. Completely unnecessary, and far too busy.

"Keep It Simple, Stupid!" as they say...

Some of the components in the responsometers probably have some ferrous compounds, since they're like mini computers.

Magneto and the Magnetic Men! That's a honey of a team up! Every now and again, I like to see the Amalgams DE-malgamized, so for example, you might Superman and Captain America against Luthor and the Sleeper Robots. Such a beautiful piece you have here!

@carycomic - How about Spider-Man and Detective Chimp and the Falcon and Redwing vs: The Vulture! Gorilla Grodd! The Rhino! The Cheetah! Byth! It's the Menagerie of Menace!

BTW, Platinum (or "Tina") is technically NOT a woman, "she" just shaped like one; also, the Metal Men's creator and leader is a "Will" Magnus, whose last name was also an alias of Magneto's.

@Bob Greenwade: How about Magnus, Robot Fighter vs. Rosemary "Rosie the Robot" Jetson (The Jetsons (2017)), who was born a human, NOT a robot.

I've never known you to argue AGAINST a character's original look.

Carycomic said...

@Bigby65: the responsometers could be Doc Magnus' term for what modern-day cyberneticists might call "wetware." Organically based circuits that would allow computers to creatively solve those problems for which logic, alone, proved insufficient.

In short; artificial intelligence.

If such is the case, Magneto might be able to control them just as he once controlled the Scarlet Witch. Which, in her case, meant inducing suggestibility by slowing down the flow of blood-iron to her brain!

@ELS: I second that emotion. :-)

Platinum has already met Jocasta on cover #194 of September 20, 2012.

I also consider the similarity of his appearances to be incredible, despite completely different personalities and powers.

A meeting that could be revisited, now without the inclusion of Metal Men or Machine Man.

@Anon@2:22: Meh. I prefer the original, un-"updated" Rosie. Let her come around to help out Jarvis and Pennyworth (who have been shown here together, just not with the extra help... and one might even throw in Cadbury for good measure).

@Paganini: Thanks for the link to #194 (even if the other links in your comment were completely superfluous). Having Tina and Casta meeting solo, because of their similar looks, was my point; that cover just doesn't address the similarity at all, what with Machine Man and the other Metal Men also present.

@Bob Greenwade Thank you for the support.

The other links are for those who want to see other covers with the characters mentioned. One way, both to help the reader remember what I'm talking about, and to see other incredible works done by Ross.

Bob Greenwade said...

@Paganini: There's a list of tag links to the left side with everyone's name for that purpose. That's what makes yours superfluous. The only links that are truly helpful are those to specific issues, or to external links (like YouTube videos).
