Captain Marvel Vs. Thanos

The Big Red Cheese facing off against The Mad Titan!  This would truly be a clash of personality as well as power.  I was glad to hear that a Shazam! sequel is moving forward - That Mr. Mind teaser at the end of the first movie really got me looking forward to a second installment.  Let's hope Asher Angel doesn't have too much of a growth spurt, he already seemed a little old to me to be playing Billy Batson this first time around.

Well, look at this way, Ross. You could say they cast him because they wanted a Billy Batson who was mentally and emotionally immature. In which case, they succeeded as, in the first movie, Asher was definitely no angel.

I could be wrong (and I'm sure someone will tell me if I am), but I think the current comics iteration of Billy is supposed to be a bit older than the classic, pre-Crisis version. My impression of the latter was that he was around 8-10, while the current one seems to be around 13, which would make Asher about right.

What's really needed, I think, is for the entire "Shazamily" to get code-names. (Do you hear me, Mr. Geoff Johns?) In the comics, unlike the movie, Billy can introduce himself as Shazam without transforming (he has to call it out for that to happen), and Freddy suggested calling himself King Shazam; however, those won't work in the movie, where just saying it at any level will set off the lightning. Using the Captain Thunder name (from the pre-publication and Flashpoint times) for Billy would work in the movie, and in either setting the name Mary Marvel is still up for grabs, but I don't know of anything being done with any of the others. I can't even think of any good suggestions (unless Pedro can call himself Captain Power).

But yeah... the second movie should be fun. Its release date is supposed to be pretty close to that for Black Adam, so a tie-in is pretty certain -- and word is that a crossover is planned for the next cycle.

In a related note, I'm still hoping that someday we can see Gomer Pyle join the Marvel Family!

is Capt Marvel invulnerable for Achilles? or the new god referenced for that letter?
Can't figure out how Batman who laughs infected him if Cap is not supposed to be affected by such material.

On an unrelated note: I'm a little surprised you didn't use The Shadow for Groundhog Day. :-)

P.S. @ Fishinginthestream: in classical mythology, Achilles was vulnerable in the heel that his mother Thetis held him by while dipping him in the River Styx as a baby. So, I'm more-than-a-little surprised past DC writers never took advantage of that technicality! You know; writing a story in which that particular podiatric vulnerabilty was conveyed to the good captain.

@Anon@11:29: Hey, maybe next year's Groundhog Day can feature The Shadow and Sonic the Hedgehog... in an adventure against the Time Trapper!

You've all been great audience members but I'm waiting for the tv show Can you beat Shazam to change into something whenever they say it's name (and not just a commercials).

There was a story in the 1970s where a villain tried to kill Captain Marvel by striking at this heel. When that failed, Cap explained that he only gets his courage from Achilles; his invulnerability comes from the Power of Zeus.

Thanks guys. It still leaves a question of how vulnerable is the good Captain? Outer shell can withstand x-y-z but his internals? Ray Palmer, viruses, drugs, poison food, etc can affect him as if he were a regular guy? For real?

Aren't Cap stories usually written the viewpoint of a good story, rather than continuity?

For example, if taken seriously, the Wisdom of Solomon would end most stories in two pages or less.

CC Beck art!

I love a lot of modern artists, but Beck is the only artist (IMO) who can really do the Big Red Cheese right!

@Bob Greenwade: sounds like a plan to me. ;-)

I remember King Solomon telling Billy Batson (in the Seventies comic book): "If I was truly wise, I wouldn't have had over three hundred wives!"

300?????

LOL! No wonder he owned so many diamond mines.

Truly, THIS Captain Marvel is a proper match for the Mad Titan. If Marvel and DC ever work together again, this is the story I want to see, right down to the notion of Thanos seeking the Rock of Eternity!

I wouldn't worry too much about Asher Angel; Warner Brothers got such good reactions from the use of de-aging tech they employed with the kids from IT! CHAPTER 2, they'll probably go to the same VFX shop and use it here, too...

Bob Greenwade said...

@Ivan: It could happen. That could be a part of the recently-revealed Secret Crisis. All that needs to happen is to talk Kevin Feige into going forward with it.

Carycomic said...

Reportedly, it would be easier to talk a two-year-old into NOT being terrible.

Why? Is he difficult to work with?

Naw! Just too busy to easily get in to see.
