The Punisher and The Authority

 Probably the most surprising announcement in James Gunn's DCU line up was an Authority movie.  I think Gunn may want to juxtapose their style of crimefighting against that of Superman's.  Superman Legacy promises to present the kinder, more optimistic and inspiring Man of Steel that's been missing from the movies for too long.  I expect that a follow up movie will see Superman clashing with The Authority like he did with The Elite in the comics and on video.

I take it, then, that the Authority (during Wildstorm's days as an Image imprint) were more like The Boyz than the Silver Age JLA? Interesting!

Given all the hype surrounding a certain four-or-five hour event that's coming up, later tonight, I was expecting some sort of tie-in effort. Like, say, Doc Samson trying to give anger-management counseling to OSCAR The Grouch.

The Authority aren't quite as bad as "The Seven" from The Boys, but definitely more aggressive than the JLA. They were basically the answer to the question "Why don't super hero teams every try to solve real world problems like corrupt regimes and global inequality?" and showed what it might look like if super heroes tried to change the status quo for the better and the problems/backlash that could result.

Also, I LOVE that Glenn Fabry cover. I hope we'll see more of his stuff. Maybe his version of Thor and John Constantine could team up.

@Cary: Interesting idea; Ross could also pair up Oscar the Grouch with Felix the Cat. Those two would certainly make an odd couple.

Good idea! :-)

I even have the perfect plot gimmick. Poindexter's uncle (that mad scientist who resembled Mr. Moneybags in a lab coat) has that gangster bulldog throw the Bag of Tricks in Oscar's garbage can. But, of course, Felix wants it back, only to get in a tug-of-war with Oscar.

Would Frank have a problem with Midnighter??

Probably...especially if Apollo lent a hand!

@Carycomic: I can just imagine Goody Rickles--from JIMMY OLSEN v. 1/#141--calling them "The World's Sweetest." ;-)
