X-Men and the Justice Society in: "The Swap!"

This weekend, Black Adam will bring the JSA to the big screen, though I'm not sure how closely they will follow the comics.  This seems to be a new group, under the direction of Amanda Waller - so sort of a more heroic version of Task Force X, I guess.  Will there be any mention of an original team?  Will there be any ties to the Justice League?  I guess we will find out soon.

The JSA and X-Men have met a few times before.  They faced a crisis in Westchester in STF #2404, They were manipulated by Apocalypse in STF #1675, and first crossed paths in STF #1400...

Excellent blending, Ross! And I guess two of the swaps, right away.

Dr. Mid-nite = Cyclops.

Golden Age Hawkman = Angel.

Another easy-to-guess swap: Black Canary = Marvel Girl.

And although he's not on the cover, Wildcat would be a great swap with Beast.

Okay, swapping minds happens every now in comics. Hawkman and Angel is an easy choice. Marvel Girl and Black Canary is, too. I was going to say Dr. Mid-Nite and Cyclops because both have vision problems, but instead I will say Cyclops and Starman because Starman might have better idea of what the blasting things would entail and is used to taking careful shots. Dr. Mid-Nite would probably be better with the Beast. That would leave Dr. Fate with Iceman. Dr. Fate is used to conjuring things and Iceman can create things out of ice.
Anyone have any different ideas using the heroes on the cover?

I was thinking Dr Mid-Nite and Beast, since neither of them can fly or have energy-related powers.

I was going to put up my analysis of who would swap minds with whom, but Ordinaryguy2 did better than I ever could.

As he also pointed out, body-swaps are rather common in comics; in fact, they can also be found on TV, as a standard plot most often done during a show's third season. The original Star Trek, Stargate, Farscape, and many other shows have done it, often as an opportunity for the regular actors to portray each other's characters.

It's also not the first time we've had a body swap here; one that comes to mind is the Defenders and the Inferior 5 way back in #1116. But what else would be fitting for this blog? Jimmy Olson and Thor? The Strange Brothers? Indiana Jones and Bugs Bunny? Ambush Bug and She-Hulk?

I'd say Starman and the Beast as they're both genius scientists. But, Ted Knight has always depended on his cosmic rod to defy gravity whereas Hank McCoy has always done so via his mutant strength and agility. So, I think it'd make a stunning contrast to see their initial reactions to mastering slightly unfamiliar abilities.

And Dr. Fate in Iceman's body would be perfect for a confrontation with the frigid fiends of Ikthalon!

As in, Ikthalon, king of the pocket dimension of Boreas @ Marvel Spotlight v. 1/#14?

The same. :-)

And they both have medical backgrounds.

@Bob Buethe: I thought William Drake had been an accountant.

P.S.---and if you're referring to Starman and the Beast, I thought Ted Knight's doctorates were in astronomy and electronics.

I was replying to Alaric's comment about the similarities between Dr. Mid-Nite and the Beast. Sorry, but I don't know who William Drake is.

Carycomic said...

Bobby Drake's father.

Question is, what's the difference in the two teams to change? Was it distance? Or the element of surprise like when Superman and Batman switch costumes?

Hmm... Just showing the heroes dealing with the differences of the 1940's and 1960's cultures. They'd still be like fish out of water in each other's situations, but that makes the story more interesting. Another good swap might be the X-Men and Star Trek TNG.

Let me guess: Prof. Xavier = Jean-Luc Picard; Admiral Leonard McCoy (retd.) = Hank McCoy; and Commander Montgomery Scott = Scott Summers.

P.S.---if Scotty joined the Green Lantern Corps, do you think he would've finally had enough power to do something?

JLA 29 was my first comic.

I have a team-up cover in the same vein here featuring Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew meeting the Justa Lotta Animals by Scott Shaw: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1298169.

@Anon 12:16 PM: I was thinking Cyclops/Geordi La Forge,(optics) Beast/Worf,(strength-agility) and Marvel Girl/Counselor Troi(telepaths, naturally). And maybe, a Data/Cerebro swap? I guess that leaves Riker, the pilot, and the Angel trading places. Oh, and Wesley? Iceman I guess.(Hey mom, look at what I can make!) Of course, the double Patrick Stewart effect would be unavoidable. That's what creates the crisis. ;)
