The New Warriors and The Justice Society of America

Judging by the characters recently and about to be introduced, it looks like the MCU is just going to skip right by The New Warriors and go straight to The Young Avengers.  I suppose that is understandable, as Avengers is the marquee name, but I still hope Marvels' 90's teen team eventually get their chance at live action. You just know that Speedball would look cool displaying his abilities.

That's a NICE looking J S A. Status trap or time shift?
The house of the Mouse is happy to make new product with new characters. After they get enough exposure, fans can constantly order their stuff on line during the virus and not miss a beat. Here's to legally screwing the actors and fans. Disney and Marvel never have to be concerned about being cancelled out by the audience.

Looks like they're in cryostatic hibernation, D.T. A ret-con plot device used for a lot of public domain Golden Agers back in the late Eighties/early Nineties.

I think that this highlights just how awful the Golden Age Atom's costume really was. This artwork is a latter-day rendering of his second costume, and even at that the style is cheesy and colors are badly coordinated. I love the character -- arguably one of the most inspirational yet underrated of his time -- but his taste in costuming... well, it reflects his being a college sophomore, and his major clearly was not fashion design. (His original costume had so many different colors that reprints were recolored to eliminate one or two.) Seeing him with the beautiful simplicity of the others here only underscores that for me; even Sandman's spandex outfit and Starman's finned hood look good by comparison.

(And I'm assuming that that's Johnny Thunder in the Navy uniform?)

Just as an observation, I'm guessing based on the costumes -- Atom's aforementioned costume change, Sandman's spandex, Dr. Fate's helmet, Wonder Woman's shorts -- that this is somewhere near the end of the war.

As for the New Warriors, I find it odd that I don't remember ever hearing of them before this. They apparently were introduced and given their own title when I was at the peak of my comics-reading days. I guess I was probably too focused on X-titles and Titans at the time.

But don't worry, Ross. If the Young Avengers work out, the New Warriors can have a hope of also showing up.

(I'm personally hoping for a Young Avengers Disney+ show. We have a good potential start with Speed, Wiccan, Kid Loki, Ironheart, Stature, and probably one or two others that I've forgotten about. And I do hope that Kid Loki keeps Alligator Loki in tow!)

PS: For me, the breakout character from What If...? so far is Scott Lang from the ...Zombies? episode, especially once the Cloak of Levitation teams up with him. (I won't spoil the circumstance for those who haven't seen the show.) I want to see that in live-action (even if it's just a cameo in Quantumania or something, and I think it'd be fun to see him here somehow. Maybe against The Brain, from DC's Brotherhood of Evil?

In the comics, IIRC, it was a trap that Brainwave used against them in 'All-Star Squadron': While their bodies were thus contained, he made them think that they were fighting against the Japanese in the Philippines (& then in Japan itself?) -- thus OOC providing a new explanation for a wartime 'All-Star Comics' issue in which [against history] the JSA succeeded in [at least the Philippines stage of] such a campaign -- with his plan being that their believing themselves to be getting killed in the battles would kill them for real. It failed because he then made the mistake of adding Green Lantern (whom, you might recall "wrote the book on willpower") to hos original eight captives...

Yes, it is.

No, it was a fairly early issues of 'All-Star Squadron' -- memory says somewhere around #18 -- so that places it no more than a few months after Pearl Harbour.

A certain mishandling of a bomb and people gave them a LOT of exposure. Especially since it was they that caused the CIVIL WAR between Captain America and friends.

If the Warriors show up in the MCU, it will probably just be an Easter Egg, maybe a comic or cartoon TV show shown in passing, so that Disney can keep the trademarks current and have a basis to sell some more action figures.

The image of the Warriors must be late in their run, as Justice and Firestar are in their post-Avengers costumes.

It's from an Avengers cover.

@Bob: I thought the Golden Age Atom's second costume was the post-war replica of Cyclotron's outfit.

Bob Greenwade said...

I thought that's what this was. I'll have to look things up again; I'm more likely mistaken than you (whoever you are).

Carycomic said...

I hate to admit it. But, Anon1203 is right. Al Pratt's outfit in the All-Star Squadron series was the exact same one he was drawn wearing during the JSA's original WWII publication. The costume he was depicted wearing during all those Silver Age team-ups with the JLA (mostly gold with blue cape and matching cowl offset with red crest) was a post-war revision.

One that never got explained in-story until the introduction of Cyclotron in the Eighties.

Thanks, carycomic! :-)

I couldn't have said it better, myself.

I'm still going to look for myself, because I won't remember it later unless I've seen it with my own eye.

@Bob: hey! That's a great idea for Monday's cover. Nick Fury, Major John Force, and Space Angel in... "The Eyes Have It!"

Mr. Greenwade? You're a genius.

Or the Fantastic Four's Human Torch and Invisible Woman could find out they have a Loser in their family tree.

@Cary: Hey, I'm not the genius here. I merely vaguely referenced my own vision problem, and you ran with it.

And you know, you could always add Danger Mouse to that mix, and possibly Hudson the Gargoyle, Tong from Raya and the Last Dragon, or Kakashi Hatake from Naruto.
