Tintin and Popeye

I remember watching a local TV variety program called The Uncle Gus Show, because once per episode, the host would introduce a (usually black and white) Popeye cartoon.  Back in those days it was the only place I could see the animated adventures of the world's most famous sailor, and his nemesis Bluto.  There was something special about these cartoons, the creativity and detail involved in those shorts were definitely above the standard cartoon fare I was used to.  I later discovered that these were produced by The Fleischer Studios, which explains the quality.  Whether it was Popeye, Superman, Betty Boop or one of their other properties, their cartoons were always top notch.

That's my favorite Popeye cover! It's serving as my desktop image right now and has been for a few months. Love the puzzled look on Popeye's face. I identify with his approach to technology.

Popeye's one of the most unchanging yet maleable characters out there. He fits everywhere. My favorite 'cameo' has to be when Terry Austin snuck him into an Avengers story. I think it was an issue of WHAT IF...? about the Korvac Saga. [#32(4/82)-- but I'd have to check to be sure]. It was a scene in which, as in the original story, the Collector had been capturing various former Avengers and holding them in some sort of stasis tubes. Rows of tubes line the back wall and right where the panel border cuts them off you can see half of a character with an oversized forearm and familiar anchor tattoo. Boy, Gyrich was right back then; they were letting in just about everybody!

I remember Uncle Gus! The only times I saw it was when my family vacationed at Hampton Beach in New Hampshire. Remember watching it on an old black and white TV...
