It was a pretty controversial storyline when it was revealed that Zatanna erased some memories of her allies in the Justice League. What would happen if she tried to pull the same stunt on Earth's Mightiest Heroes... and what would cause her to take such a drastic action? The answers are only 60 cents away!

Interesting group of Avengers - Been catching up with old Avengers books since Jim Shooter (RIP) shot fans in foot and do not remember this combination without a lot more Avengers being in group.
I wonder if it might have something to do with all the strange recent clashes involving the student body at Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters.* For example; could that mind-controlling red crystalline parasite have forced her to abduct them on behalf of their old enemies, the N'Garai? So that, after throwing off its influence, she "recruited" the Avengers' help to affect a rescue? Thereby avoiding judgmental fall-out from both the X-men and the JLA?
*See STF #'s 4678-80.
‘Jim Shooter (RIP)’—wait, WHAT?!
Given that he's still alive, that must be a sarcastic way of saying he committed vocational suicide at Marvel by 1987.
Like, for example, firing Roger Stern as Mark Gruenwald's co-writer on the Avengers.
Or maybe she just didn't want them interfering in an upcoming mystic battle. One where she, Mandrake, and Mickey Mouse (as the Sorcerer's Apprentice) combine forces to rescue Drs. Mid-nite and Strange @ STF #4686!
Or, to make all forget so that if someone tries to pick their brains, they will come up short in a way they can't expect. So much for knowing this enemies info and plans. Cranston would be proud of this mind fog!!
My first guess would be that this mission is one that they forgot voluntarily for security reasons, but the Avengers don't look very voluntary to me. Even so, it wouldn't be the first time a cover didn't quite match up with the interior.
When the Illuminate made Captain America forget he later remembered. He would break Zatannas spell. Not sure about the other Avengers.
Me: This group of Avengers comes from issue 212 of the original series, when they fought the Elfqueen. The lineup had only been formed in the previous issue, and Wasp (temporarily, due to injury) and Yellowjacket (permanently) were out after the next issue.
