Psylocke and Katana

Psylocke entered the scene just as I was getting out of the X-Men comics, so I never really learned too much about her, other than the fact that her costume looked really uncomfortable to fight crime in. Still, she does seem to be pretty popular and I have received some requests to include her.  I am glad she can finally make her STF debut.

They may not be at Captain Marvel's level but woe to any idiot who thinks they're just a couple dames to be shoved out of the way.

As I understand it, she was Brian Braddock's sister. A telepathic mutant like Jean Grey. Right down to having a "will they/won't they ever" relationship with Doug Ramsey (a la Jean and Scott, themselves)!

Then came the convoluted story arc where she was supposedly killed (in action (against Mojo, perhaps?). But, in actuality, had been kidnapped and brainwashed by the Yakuza who then transferred her mind into the body of a Japanese esper ninja who (for some reason) had been code-named "Kwannon" after the Chinese goddess of mercy!

I'm not sure I've provided you too much of a helping "Hand" with this explanation. But, it's all I can remember off the top of my head.

Yeah Carycomic, Psylocke is one of those Chris Claremont characters that became overly complicated real quick. She was the sister of Brian Braddock (Captain Britain). It was introduced early on that she had some kind of precognitive powers, but it took a while before that became actual telepathy. She briefly became Captain Britain when Brian did one of those "I quit being a superhero" moment, but was blinded and received cybernetic eyes as a result. This was all in Marvel's UK comics.

Claremont then brought Psylocke over to US comics in New Mutants Annual #2 which had Alan Davis on art. She then becomes a supporting X-Men character. In one of those odd Claremont moments, a romance is set up between the much older, mature adult, and experienced Psylocke and Doug Ramsey who is still a teenager at this point. But that's OK because I don't think anything was ever done with this "romance."

Shortly thereafter she joins the X-Men in the aftermath of the Mutant Massacre because the team needs new members to replace those that were injured. She now has full blown Professor X/Marvel Girl telepathic powers which I don't think was established before, because it's Claremont who never let continuity or common sense get in the way of doing something he thought was interesting at that moment. Then after this team of the X-Men is "killed" in the next crossover (Fall of the Mutants), the team hides out in Australia for the next several years.

I think it's in the Australia period that Psylocke gets her enchanted armor that physically protects her body because why not. So Betsy who was originally just a supporting cast member for her brother with the occasional precognitive ability is now a powerful mutant telepath with unexplained enchanted armor.

At the end of the Australian period when the team disappears into a mystic gateway in order to escape the Reavers, she is captured by the Hand, and turned into a brainwashed highly trained race swapped Asian ninja-assassin who can now create "psychic knives". Because why not. Of course, she quickly escapes the brainwashing and rejoins the X-Men. None of whom ever seem interested in questioning on how she became Asian. Because why would that ever be important?

Three to four years later (and after Claremont is kicked off the title), it is eventually revealed that Asian Psylocke is actually some other Asian character who was a brain damaged Hand member, and the Hand somehow put Psylocke's mind into it. But then the real Betsy comes back. But since I stopped reading these comics by this point, I'll be honest and state I have no idea what happens afterwards or whether Psylocke remains Asian or English or what happened to whoever the writers decided was the disposable version.

Katana was my 2nd favorite Outsider after Halo! I still feel it was a missed opportunity that writer Mike W. Barr (or other later writers) never further explored her "haunted" sword. A very unique sublot to her origin. SIGH.

FYI - in the original early run, Katanas sword was haunted by her dead husband, and filled with the souls of everyone it killed. The sword was called the Soultaker. But not sure if it's still canon.

@ my namesake? I think the mystic armor was a side-effect of being Brian Braddock's temp-sub as Capt. Britain (Merlin's version of Capt. America-meets-Green Lantern).

Intriguing cover. Katana's sword takes souls like Ragman... If they both went after a person's soul at the same time...could the soul split in parts?
Ross, you do have a large 'playground' to play in and you show a lot of fun and creativity.

Re: Psylocke's outfit? I'll wager it's no more uncomfortable than the one worn by Cyblade of Top Cow's Cyberforce.

@Carycomic: actually, I'd say the most popular depiction(s) of Psylocke's outfit seem to be a cross between Cyblade and Elektra.

Carycomic said...

@Anon217: then how about Psylocke, Cyblade, Elektra, and Jakita Wagner as "The Lethal Ladies of Leather!"?

Ross permitting, of course. :-)

How about Katana and Shang-Chi vs. Shang Tsung and Quan-Chi?

I'd prefer Katana meet Kitana (from the Mortal Kombat games).
