Judge Dredd Vs. Howard the Duck

This cover required a bit of prep work before I could add Howard into the mix.  Here's a look at the behind the scenes progress:

THIS is one bill the Judge is going to really Dredd getting involved with!Especially since he can't cry Foul!

Look out, Howard!
Duck!
(Apologies. I couldn't resist.)
Another totally off-the-wall combination, another great job. And the two principals are so utterly different it really sets the imagination (or at least mine) working on what happens next...

LOL! If I didn't know better, I'd swear that's Howard in the bottom right panel, burying his head in the sand. Come on, Howard! You're a duck, not an ostrich.*

*Insert poor-man's imitation of Sir David Attenborough, here: "Ostriches, of course, do not really bury their heads in the sand. That is an erroneous belief stemming from their habit of lowering their necks below the tops of scrub-growth trees so as not to be seen by predators."

Heh heh! Here's a HTD story that needs to get out. Considering all the offbeat supervillains and weirdos that Howard faced, Dredd looks right at home here, strangely enough. Steve Gerber had some brilliant moments with Howard as got inside the heads of his adversaries. In this case, Howard probably couldn't crack Dredd's psyche, but maybe this Duck could become a Judge himself!

I wonder what Dredd would think of Dr. Bong? Prior to shooting him, regardless, that is!

P.S. @ Carycomic: that's not Howard. That's the judge's left knee pad!

I'm not super familiar with Howard, but this does seem to me just the kind of situation he'd find himself in.

@Cary: I tried reading your copy in my best Attenborough voice, and it really does flow like one of the nature specials he'd narrate. Well done.

It's a shame you couldn't leave that mouth on the cover. With the Judge, it would have been perfect for Howard to tell the mouth..SMILE,when you say THAT!!

Carycomic said...

Or, at the very least: "Same old same-old. Always shooting off his mouth!"

@Cary: That's what they said about Robespierre....

I'm not very familiar with Judge Dredd's setting, but wouldn't Dredd probably assume that Howard is actually a mutant and don't mutants get thrown out into a wasteland between the mega-cities?

Carycomic said...

@Simreeve: I think Mega City One was supposed to be the leading city-state of a post-apocalyptic 22nd century Earth.

@Bob Greenwade: you mean, the duckling from that 1944 Warner Brothers cartoon, "Booby Hatched"? The one where only his webbed feet managed to penetrate the egg shell?

@Carycomic: I think he was referring to the ill-fated father of the French Revolution. Losing his mind, first, and his head, second.

Just noticed behind the judge's right shoulder. Is that Bozo the Iron Man hugging Rosie the Jetson Robot?
