Roger Rabbit and Dick Tracy

As a big fan of crossovers, I was of course a huge fan of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Not only was the combination of live action and animation done amazingly well (it still holds up today), the film was full of characters sharing the screen that I never expected to see.  Seeing Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny interact was cool, and watching ducks Daffy and Donald in a dueling piano battle was pure bliss.  I wonder if there will ever be a sequel.

The sequel should Who Remembers Roger Rabbit? It should feature Roger as an out of work toon during the time of Saturday morning cartoons. It could have lots of cameos by classic Saturday morning cartoon characters. Then have Roger team with a human to go rescue his wife from a villain or some other such plot just to work in more toon cameos.

I would also love to see another Dick Tracy movie.

Another seamless one. I want to see what happens next. Roger is clearly going to hit Tracy a big one... but I have a suspicion he is barely going to notice.

@Sound Mind: Roger could certainly get to meet those who were able to successfully transition from silver screen to TV screen. Like Tom and Jerry from MGM and/or Heckle & Jeckle and Mighty Mouse from the Terrytoons. But,personally, I'd love to see how he handled the slightly grittier animation of Hanna-Barbera's superhero cartoons!*

@Ross: I'd say, in this case, the sequel is going to feature Tweety's Granny as Betsy Ross in "Dick Tracy Sees Stars!"

*Let's face it. Some of Space Ghost's super-villains never returned after those rainbow-colored explosions.

The Muppets did a whole movie on a charity event of saving the Muppet Theatre. Jessica could get involved with a series of charity events with crossovers from anyone to everyone. (Just like movies of stage door canteens.)

Enough time has passed for both Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Dick Tracy that a sequel is highly unlikely. With Roger, even with inter-corporate cooperation looking more hopeful these days, I doubt that either a sequel or a reboot would be satisfactory. And even though Warren Beatty has been trying since the first Tracy movie to get a sequel going, there have been various legal and other troubles holding him back (personally I'd rather see a reboot).

I certainly agree with you on one thing, though, Ross: The WFRR piano duet/duel between Daffy and Donald ("This is the last time I work with somebody with a speech impediment!") is a true classic. The elevator ride with Droopy is equally priceless.

And so, by the way, is this cover.

PS: Now that Roger's made his debut on this blog, perhaps he can be teamed with others. Perhaps Doctor Fate, as a servant of the Lords of Order, could start hunting down the chaotic bunny. Or, just for the sake of character contrast, he could share an adventure with the Punisher or Spawn.

And even as Dr Sam Beckett settles into the body of ROGER RABBIT????
"ZIGGY!!!! Get me out of here!!"
Roger's wife, Jessica, knew something was amiss.

Carycomic said...

I favor Bob's suggestion of Roger Rabbit teaming up with the Punisher...against Elmer Fudd!

Bob Greenwade said...

Actually, if we get another appearance from Dr. Sam Beckett, I'd kind of like to see him Leap into Jonathan Archer.

Dick Tracy did have a cameo in the film, of course. I like the idea of them winding up in the same investigation.
Another thing I'd like to see from Roger's universe is their version of the Second World War, with Roger in the Army Air Force tussling with Gremlins, while Jessica works in a munitions plant, creating military-grade versions of Eddie Valiant's "live ammunition".

Where's the Living Eraser when you really need him?

The dueling duck scene in Roger Rabbit was great, as was Betty Boop saying that work has been been slow since cartoons went into colour.

Suggestion for this blog: Betty Boop and the Endless

Bob Greenwade said...

@Anon@8:23: What was really awesome about Betty Boop was the casting of Mae Questel, one of the character's original voice actresses.

You hit the ball out of park on first swing. A great combination. The Dick Tracy film had Charles Fleischer, the voice of Roger, as a reporter.

The "Who framed Roger Rabbit?" sequel is already under development and I hope this time it is successful.

Now if you can include Jessica Rabbit with some other redhead women on a cover.

@Glenn and Ross: How about making her a member of Code Red?

Ross said...

Glenn: Thanks!

Anon, I thought of the same thing. That or her meeting Jessicas Fletcher and Drew to solve some kind of mystery.

Tracy just found the biggest stash of DIP hidden in Toon Town! And Jessica is afraid he'll use it! Too bad Roger is about to use a clown-hammer from Acme.

Ross said...

Ken: Let's hope Tracy has some toon abilities of his own to withstand the blow!

Bob Greenwade said...

@Glenn: According to the Wikipedia article on WFRR, Robert Zemeckis has a "wonderful" script that moves Roger and Jessica to the 1950s, but the folks at Disney have little to no interest in making it, for various reasons.

@Ross: A meeting of the Jessicas would be brilliant! You could even toss in Jones and (possibly) Cruz.

Ken Roskos said...

Hi Ross, have no fear. Dick Tracy has taken punishment that rivals Denny Colt's Spirit. Besides, that toon-sledge will probably miss him, or bounce off harmlessly and rebound right back into Roger's kisser. Or else Tracy is actually Fearless Fosdick in disguise.

personally i would skip Jessica Cruz with the other Jessicas (ie Jones, Rabbit & Fletcher) and include Jessica Alba instead....
a matter of personal preference i guess....

I'd rather see Jessica Drew team up with Nancy Drew.

Would Jessica Rabbit and Selina Kyle?

Bob Greenwade said...

@Ken: The idea of Roger's mallet bouncing off Tracy and hitting Roger in the noggin is Roger all over. He's generally more of a danger to himself than others.

If Catwoman married Nighthawk, would that make her Selina Kyle-Richmond?

Carycomic said...

@Ann Ominous: Nah! Then she'd be "Catbird!"

If Roger is with Dick for a new crossover, can a shmoo be far behind?

Ken Roskos said...

(On Tracy's wrist-radio) "We've been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty..."

Carycomic said...

Followed by: "Hi! Have you tried Domino's new freeway delivery service? Simply call us from your car phone and, if we don't pull you over in 30 minutes or less, your pizza is free!"

Bob Greenwade said...

@Cary: "Pull over"? A proper freeway delivery would pass the (prepaid) pizza car to car at 65 mph!

Sorry guys, but no. They showed they could frisbee the box out to a car but the receiving car would have a problem getting it safely.

Carycomic said...

Hence, modifying the policy to a _mandatory_ pullover delivery.*

*Watch! Some idiotic lurker will take all this facetious kidding around too seriously and actually call the nearest Domino's from a hands-free cellphone or Bluetooth or whatever.

That way, you could call it "Voodoo Meets Booboo!"
