I'd say my personal favorite artist is Jim Aparo, but if you were to ask me who I think is the best comic artist ever, I'd have to say Joe Kubert. He had such a confident hand and could make any genre of story look great. As if his artistic contributions weren't enough, his school for comic art has passed his lessons on to new generations of illustrators. I was never able to pick up a full original page by him, but I did get the next best thing: Kubert inks over the talented pencils of Nestor Redondo from DC's Tarzan series:

How the heck did the Red Skull get hold of another Cosmic Cube? Did he hire the Fadeaway Man to go back to 1602 and steal one?
Joe certainly had a recognizable style. His way of doing semi-shading is unduplicated.
@Cary: Wouldn't it be something if that was actually a Jedi holocron in Red Skull's hand?
@Bob Greenwade: excellent idea! And I know just the one.
The Holocon of Chu-Gon-Dar!
I had to look that one up... and yeah, that's something we'll want to keep out of the wrong hands, for sure. (I'm thinking Thanos or Dr. Doom.) It could also be the target of a hunt by the Librarians and/or Warehouse 13!
Yet another bizarre idea, spawning from an unrelated conversation:
Swamp Thing vs. the Killer Tomatoes!
@BG: Why not? With all the other cult-classics getting remade (whether the public wants them or not), it's long-past time for some Hollywood hack to "ketchup" with this one.
@Cary: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrroan!
"The good news is...we both got admitted to the Kubert school!" :)
Swamp Thing vs the Killer Tomatoes!?? Isn't that taking all of them in "vine"?
If it's "vine," with them, it should be "vine" with you.
How about the Grinch and Gorilla Grodd? Some illustrators make them look almost like brothers?
To give the House of Mystery some competition, Marvel has launched "Hotel Dormammu" with Blue Devil as the doorman. The rest of the staff keep changing.(a lot.)
Kubert also developed Hawkman's headgear, without and later, with its wings. Grrrreeaat job.
@Anon437:
"You're a mean one, Mr. Grodd! More shocking than an electric eel.
You're basically a hirsute Doctor Von Doom wanna-be.
Mr. Grooodd? Go suck on a banana with a greasy black peel!"
With all due respect for--apologies to--Dr. Seuss and Albert Hague.
@Carycomic: "I do not like green eggs and ham.
I do not like them, Sam I-Am.
And if I ate them, you would see...
The world's first green c--r--a--p!"
U kiddin? Green c r a p has been around for years thanks to different meds.
Did Joe ever do the forties Hawkman?
Yes he did. I believe it was his first comic book work.
One of the Top 100 signs you're getting old.
Me (in answer to a question): "I'm reading Hawkman drawn by Kubert."
Millenial-under-25: "You mean, that little guy with the weird word balloons from WRECK-IT RALPH?"
