Beta Ray Bill and Adam Strange in: "Jabba's Ransom!"

It looks like Adam and Bill have resolved whatever conflict The Grandmaster was trying to engineer in STF #3194... and this is not the end of this adventure - so make sure to come back tomorrow for the exciting conclusion!

I was glad to use an Ivan Reis Adam Strange image for this cover.  Here's an original Superman/Batman page by Reis that I picked up many years ago:

Always good to see Adam Strange. And back with his ABC Squad buddy, Bill.
...But they've clearly failed lamentably to find any new members for the Squad. Maybe got turned down by all those cool Captains?
I think they should start from the other end of the alphabet. Add Zatanna and all the other character positions would get taken real fast.

The Grandmaster has stranded Dr. Strange on Tattooine? How is that possible? My first guess would be: Boba Fett using something that operated like Mr. Freeze's spray gun. Only, in this case; it shoots carbonite!

How is Beta Ray Bill involved in this game? Loki is the Grandmaster's opponent! But, disguised as that criminal genius from the Late Golden Age: Clifford "The Thinker" Devoe.*

As for the art work? Classic, to be sure. Although, that looks more like Capt. Atom than Batman behind the Man of Steel.

*Well, let's face it, Ross. I don't "think" you've used him in quite a while. ;-)

Batman is in the final panel, partially obscured by the lens flare. The page is from the comic titled Batman/Superman, where Captain Atom was guest starring.

I only have two questions: how does the butt of a Walt Disney seagull happen to know where Dr. Strange is? And why would Beta Ray Bill even listen to it?

Always happy to see Beta Ray Bill!

Funny, it doesn't look like Tatooine to me. At least, I don't remember that planet having any structures this large -- not even Jabba's palace. (I'm sure someone will point out something that shows me to be mistaken, though.)

I can imagine that Stephen is in the Star Wars galaxy to secure the Jedi Temple on Lothal, possibly to keep Mordru, Rasputin (I'm thinking of the Hellboy version), or someone equally power-hungry from entering. He just got waylaid along the way by the Grandmaster and turned over to Jabba, who encased him in carbonite.

So I'm imagining an eventual Part Three, where the Strange Brothers join the crew of the Ghost (from Star Wars: Rebels), possibly with Beta Ray Bill (and even Hellboy) along as well, to stop the villain in question!

VERY cool❣️

Maybe Mos Eisley came to look more like Coruscant by the time the First Order came to power (20-30 years ABY).

Bob Greenwade said...

@Anon@9:45: That's entirely possible, but if it's Jabba's ransom, well, he died in 4 ABY (Return of the Jedi).

It could be his son Rotta, who might've changed his name to Jabba, Junior. God knows, I'd want to change it when I came of age if my first name was Rotta!

Beta Ray Bill goes bowling with a perfect game in "Rolling Thunder".

Against a cosmically amped-up Sportsmaster?

Who would win the most perfect bowling games: Bullseye, Deadshot, or Punisher?
Who would get the first non-strike in any frame?

Pinocchio, by a nose?

Sorry. My dad's addicted to that joke during every single race of the Triple Crown.

Bob Greenwade said...

@Cary: And yet it somehow escaped Doodles Weaver. Ah well -- maybe Spike Jones' recording of "The William Tell Overture" predated Walt Disney's "Pinocchio" movie.

Carycomic said...

No, the Spike Jones spoof of Rossini's most famous work came out eight years after the film debut of PINOCCHIO. So, I'll have to guess that Mr. Jones couldn't get permission from Walt Disney's legal department to use that name!
Dear old Walt did have a tendency to be monopolistic. The only other time Adriana Casselotti ever sang during the 1930's (after SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARFS) was an uncredited voice-over in THE WIZARD OF OZ.*

*She's the invisible woman quoting Juliet's famous question during the Tin Man's song-and-dance routine "If I Only Had A Heart."

Bob Greenwade said...

Nah, the character of Pinocchio had long been public domain by then. More likely the joke just didn't occur to Mr. Weaver, or it seemed redundant with "And it's Cabbage by a head!"

I, not me said...

eye remember Cabbage. He was a great hoofer.

Lettuce not do this any more.

By the way, I remember Cabbage too. At the end he got in some hot water, lost it and then just got stuffed. I think his tomato left.

Just let it B. Lt. Yogi Bear is on the scene and he's not treating it like it's a picnic.

"Exit! Stage left."

Did you hear Yogi got a new car? He calls it 'Smith'. It's a Ford Ranger .

What a coincidence! Duncan MacLeod just bought a Toyota Highlander.
