I guess one positive thing about the new Dark Phoenix movie looking more like X-Men: The Last Stand than the comics that the classic story is based upon is that it doesn't completely close the door on a proper retelling by Marvel Studios at some point down the road. Sure it would be the third cinematic version, but if they follow the comics it won't be anything like audiences have seen before.
The Outsiders first tangled with The Phoenix in STF #112...

Don't know why this cover made me think of it, but Kid Eternity and the Mighty Thor.
Someone else will probably say Kid Eternity and Marvel's Eternity, so I might as well get that idea in too.
Well, time did get rebooted at the end of X-MEN: DOFP. So, I don't think DP will be a direct sequel. More likely, the time reboot in AVENGERS: ENDGAME will probably result in Dark Phoenix (the character) being brought to the MCU from the 20 Century FoX-verse!
@Anon #1: How about Leela (Futurama) and The Mighty Thor? In the Futurama episode where Leela (and friends) became super-powered heroes, Leela mentioned The Mighty Thor.
Continuing the Leela theme, perhaps the Fourth Doctor could land in Futurama, so that Leela could meet Leela.
Or, Leela could team up with Cyclops. They both have the one-eye thing going, in different ways.
Re: Today's text: After Last Stand and Dark Phoenix, I don't think we'll see another retelling of the story until the 30s, at best. If they do it right, they'll spend a few movies setting it all up before hitting audiences with it (and I hope I'm still around to see that).
I love this cover. Dark Phoenix has had several reshoots but they did not say why. Critics who have seen the movie say nothing was learned for X-Men: Last Stand and that it repeats the mistakes of that movie. New Mutants may be going straight to Hulu rather than the movies. It is also suppose to be doing reshoots but they have not started and them movie is said to be bad.
I'm not sure you could make a good movie of the original Dark Phoenix saga, because of the time involved. For me, at least, a large part of the tragedy of Dark Phoenix was the sheer amount of time we had known Jean and Scott and all they'd been through.
The demure Marvel Girl, not at all the bad-ass (or shut-down disaster waiting to happen) the re-booted (and movie) Jeans have been. The independent Jean after the X-Men went their separate ways and Scott stayed with the New X-Men. The period where the X-Men were stuck in the Savage Land and Jean thought they were dead. Rockefeller Center at Christmas before Jean's "death" and resurrection as Phoenix. Mastermind seducing Jean and turning her into the Black Queen. Dark Phoenix on the rampage. All leading up to the battle on the moon.
It would take at least 3 or 4 full seasons of a high-grade TV show to tell that much story and hit the character beats and do it right.
And Claremont/Byrne managed to do it in a year. Phoenix rose in X-Men #125 (Sept. '79) and Jean died in #137 (Sept. '80). Still blows me away.
All this talk about Leela and Futurama has finally emboldened me to make a suggestion I've been thinking about for a while now:
Futurama and the Legion of Super Heroes! They're both set 1,000 years from now, so why not??
I can see a cover in my head, possibly split by a lightning bolt as they sometimes used to do.
Kid Eternity to Thor: "and now you go back to...Eternity."
Panel 2. Thor laughing next to Eternity. Mr. Keeper: "April Fool"
another idea came to after my grandkids were here watching the Big Hero 6 cartoon after I had watched the two newest episodes of the CW's Supergirl...
a group comprised of characters who carry magic bag into which they can reach and pull out anything they want/need, such as Big Hero 6's Honey Lemon or the Elite's The Hat. There are also Shaman from Alpha Flight and Felix the Cat from TV and comics...
there must be more but at the moment I am drawing a blank so throw it open for your readership to fill in the gaps...
both this one and the earlier Phoenix and the Outsiders covers are very cool, as is most everything you do here, Ross....
big thanks for you fun blog...
now that i think some more on the above idea what about Mary Poppin's carpet bag as well as Silent Bob's coat pockets and the girl friend's purse in Scott Pilgramm....
can anyone think of any more???
Mary Poppins' carpet bag springs to mind. Or if you want to "extend" the concept, the number of trick arrows in Green Arrow's quiver or gadgets in Batman's utility belt. Or the number of gadgets in Inspector Gadget. Or Dr. Who's Tardis. Or any clown car. I think there was a super villain who could pull out any weapon he wanted....
@Anonymous #4: I think that MC Hammer-Space. ;-D
@Jay: what you say about taking 3-4 seasons of a TV show to do the whole Dark Phoenix saga right is quite legitimate. However, the MCU has made a practice of setting up big things for a bigger payoff later. Part of the point of doing Civil War when they did was so the Avengers would be fractured and unprepared for Thanos in Infinity War. So, there'd be a few films to set up the relationship between Scott and Jean -- at the very least, two full X-Men films and supporting roles for the two of them in another film -- and the Phoenix saga could be told to two parts, with the rise of the Phoenix in the first and the Dark Phoenix part coming later. In between those two, she could be at least touched on in the Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy, and/or Doctor Strange movies.
Re: characters with "Hammer-Space" abilities, I think of Shag of the Road Rovers, and Pockets of the Ant Hill Mob (Wacky Races). (And I'm on my way toward become a real-world version of such a character!)
From waaaaay back in the days of The Defenders, Devil-Slayer pulled weapons out of his cloak.
