Agents of the Abyss

Aquaman is finally getting the respect he deserves.  For a long time though, he was seen was the weak link in the JLA because of his power set.  It wasn't his fault  though, he just didn't get enough chances to show off his stuff.  hey, it's tough being  a water based hero when your team's headquarters is located on a satellite or the Moon!  It's long past time that we had a super group made up of the greatest undersea heroes.  banded together, they could shine in a way they never could when teamed up with air-breathing partners.

Very cool!
I'll argue that Aquaman's fate was always in the hands of his writers and or editors. When a writer makes Aquaman (and Martian Manhunter) the key to beating the Crime Syndicate in Earth-Two, then it's clear that Arthur Curry has untapped potential. I think Johns tapped into that hidden strength that he's always had and hopefully Parker will keep that going. Maybe the light bulb finally gone on there...?

This may seem odd or even ironic, but I think what's really sealed Aquaman's position as an inexorable part of the Justice League was the 1960s "Super Friends" TV show. Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are DC's Big Three, in large part because they were the only superheroes in comics during the "Dark Period" of the 1950s, and including Aquaman with them in that show gave him a special association with them that isn't quite like what one gets with Green Lantern or Flash. At least, that's how it is with my generation who saw the show as a kid, though I think there's still a little bit of "Aquaman just belongs in the Justice League" mentality passed on to the younger generations.

As to this cover, I think that including Ariel was an interesting choice. She's a mermaid who (to stretch the storyline a bit) can change her tail into legs and back. She also has a lot of pluck, and a huge collection of simple doodads whose function are a mystery to her. In a story, I think it would be an interesting twist if some of those doodads turned out to be a key to solving the problem!

One of my recent faves - but who's this Ecco? I would think that would have to be Flipper!

Ecco was the star of some popular video games.

I couldn't help but notice that Marvel is represented by Stingray (and arguably Ariel) rather than Namor, whose feature introduced Stingray. With a large team, that's probably a good move. I never bought the idea of him being in the Avengers-- a good guest star, or a member of a small group of three or four, like the original Defenders, but he's a little headstrong for a better-rounded team like this. Actually, except for the Creature (and maybe Ariel?), all of these characters are known to work in groups. You should probably be an editor, Ross. Or work in office management.

this is very good. but will we ever see one of your teams fight the other? like the agents of the abyss vs robo force, or something like that.

Something like that would require 12 or more images that all work together, a tall order.

Well since you have more than one Marvel character in there, how about Sea Devils/Dolphin (the human one)?

Undersea heroes, banded together? (True heroes too; no anti-hero need apply here!) Well, I had this very same idea and submitted it to the powers-that-be at DC as one of those infamous ''unsolicited submissions'' way back in the mid-90s. (I suspect it was one of the very last subs that got in -and received a polite generic rejection slip, as it was customary back then- before they outright condemned the gateway, effectively cutting off any and all forms of fledgling talents (of the quill) to ever get in through the front door -or any door- ever again.)

My ''Agents of the Abyss'' were called something else, of course - and, far from being abysmal, they were all cut from the same cloth as the Sea King himself; perhaps the one greatest flaw with that submission...! Aside from that, I see all of my ideas now being the main strength behind this resurgence of Aqua Adventure - all of it. Suffice it to say, Geoff Johns did not reinvent the windmill.

My plots and story ideas are to be found on one of my blogs here: the most appropriately called ''aqua musings''...
Look for the ''AQUA FORCE'' - if you will.

@BG: SUPERFRIENDS was a Hanna-Barbera cartoon that came out in the early 1970's. But, as voiced by Marvin Miller for Filmation, during the Sixties, Aquaman was definitely and seriously kick-**s!

@Anon1249 & Bob Greenwade: a fact that he and the rest of the Agents of the Abyss would prove if the day ever comes that Ross pits them against the Death-Dealer From The Dead Sea!*
