Swamp Thing Vs. Modok

Swamp Thing is not stranger to dealing with misshapen monstrosities, so I don't think that the sight of M.O.D.O.K. would give him much pause.   Still, if this crazed scientist had unlimited resources, he might give the Earth Elemental a run for his money.

"Funded by Sunderland" is quite funny if you're in the UK.

@Kelvin - yes. There's actually a graphic novel too (I haven't read it) - "Alice In Sunderland: An Entertainment" (2007).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_in_Sunderland
According to Wikipedia, it focuses on local (Sunderland) history, especially the links between Sunderland and Lewis Carroll, author of "Alice In Wonderland."
So Ross, where does your Sunderland come from?

I'm honestly surprised you didn't call it "Malice In Sunderland."

P.S.---depending on your preference, have either a Blessed Ash Wednesday or a Happy Valentine's Day. :-)

@Davejonz: I think it's from the Swamp Thing TV series that was done for USA Network, by Dick Durock, back in the 1980's.

For me there's yet another UK connection today...
The Eagle comic of the 1950s featured the (marvellous) comic strip, Dan Dare,Pilot Of the Future (wonderful colour art by Frank Hampson). Dan's archenemy was the Mekon - who looks very much like a green version of MODOK...

Any chance the Mekon could turn up in STF one day, perhaps partnering with Doctor Doom?

Nice. Now we can have Buck Rogers meet Dan Dare (original version or 80’s revival).

Sunderland was a foil from the comics - from the Swamp Thing Wiki: Avery Carlton Sunderland, is a fictional character and villain in comic books published by the American company DC Comics. He first appeared in Swamp Thing Vol. 2, #6. (October 1982), and was created by Martin Pasko and Tom Yeates. Avery is portrayed by Will Patton on the 2019 TV Series.

he’s right - Sunderland is much more amusing if you’re in the u.k. ,
but a villainous team up that included the Mekon and his army of Treens would be very different,
Frank Hampson’s Artwork is and was the finest to be produced in Europe.
i do wonder if Alan Moore added the Name Sunderland as that where he lives !

Happy Valentine's Day/Ash Wednesday! Love the cover but can't place the artist for the Swamp thing. Whoist the artist on this piece or cover?

Ross said...

Paul,

Artists are listed in the labels below the cover. In this case, John Byrne on both characters.

Just saying that these two would fit well into a story together isn't enough; putting them on a cover, with both by the same artist, really made it feel like it happened. Yes, certainly, if these two co-existed in the same universe, they'd be periodic foes.

But somehow Mr. Byrne's label is (as of this writing) not on the page.

M.O.D.O.K. doesn't do house plants? Shocking!! Good thing Poison Ivy isn't around.
Since "Alec" can move his mind so quickly, using him for a target might not be the best of ideas. Great cover, ripe with atmosphere.

@Bob: As of this writing, it is.:)

How about Deathurge vs. the Black Racer?

Paul said...

Thank you Ross, for some reason I didn't see Byrne's name in the labels...my bad

@PauL: well, I guess, now, it's "Byrned" into your memory. ;-D

If May Parker got the M.O.D.O.K. treatment, would she be A.U.N.T.M.A.Y. or M.A.A.M?

How about a horrified Richie Rich learning he (or his family) helped fund Alec Holland's accident?

Carycomic said...

If I were Ross, I'd definitely "green" light that idea. :-)

@Anon309: a better question. If Luthor got the M.O.D.O.K. treatment, would he call himself L.E.X.?
