Happy Halloween! for this years festivities, I thought that it was high time that this horror icon finally made his STF debut. Who better to face off against him than one of comicdom's famous Freddys? I suppose I could have gone with Fred Jones from the Scooby-Doo gang, but I can't imagine that would be a very long story. Nice one. Or rather, given it's Halloween, not at all nice.
Is Jr still allowed to use the Marvel name? For me, Billy Batson is the one, true Captain M, even though I have no objections to various Krees and earth ladies using the same name too.
It could have been worse, Ross. It could've been Jason Voorhees vs. Fred Flintstone! I can just picture the blurb you might've used.
"For millions of years, something else has lain at the bottom of Crystal Lake. Something encased in a block of ice. Should it be thawed out? YABBA-DABBA-DON'T!"
But, I like this one better. It's suitably unexpected and, yet, the images brilliantly complement each other. I mean, think about it. Young Mr. Freeman is partially handicapped in his everyday civilian form. And who do Jason most often go after in his flicks? The seemingly handicapped!
Wait till Jason encounters Mr Mind.
This would actually be as one-sided as Jason vs. Fred Jones, just against Jason this time.
Now that we have one take on Jason v Freddy... what about Red Hood vs Freddy Krueger?
My first thought was exactly what Anon@9:22 said.
Cary's remark also got me to thinking about how many superheroes in comics have some sort of physical disability, at least in their civilian guises. We've already had a meeting or two between Daredevil and Doctor Mid-Nite, but both Freddy Freeman and Donald Blake (Thor's alter ego) have difficulty walking. I know that Cap Jr. and Thor have met in group settings such as #1518 and #1958, but I'm talking about something where maybe they're both stuck in their civilian IDs through some trick of Loki and Sivana.
@Fisher: unless, of course, Mr. Mind conspired to keep Freddy Freeman in civilian mode for most of the adventure. That would certainly prolong the suspense in a real-word crossover publication!
Legally? DC is free to use the "Captain Marvel" name, as long as it's only on the inside of the comics, and not on covers, ads, or product packaging.
Canonically? DC's chosen to rename the character "Shazam," so that now applies to Freddy and Mary as well as Billy.
@Other Bob: We pretty much all know that. In the STFU, though, the name Captain Marvel is shared by Billy Batson, Carol Danvers, Mar-Vell, and a certain android (who's made only one appearance thus far).

he is from Fox Publications and would holler the word "split" to split off any body part he wanted and the word "xam" to pull himself back whole....
he fought characters called Doctor Doom, Ironjaw, Black Bat among others....

I don't recognize that cover image of Freddy. From what comic was it taken?
@Anon@1:01: For clarity, he's the guy in #1610 with the speech balloon. I'd kind of like to see him here again, if a suitable image can be found, perhaps teamed up with the original Human Torch or something.
PS: I just got done watching 1994's The Shadow, starring Alec Baldwin. It definitely holds up over time, and I think it's been unfairly maligned. Plus, I suddenly started wondering what if Lamont Cranston had a great-grandson named Billy....

A character named 'Fred X' appeared, as a messenger (& martial artist) in the Badger's graphic novel 'Hexbreaker'.
@Simreeve and Carycomic: sounds more like a robotic enemy of Jonah Hex (a la the Spider-slayers of Spencer Smythe).
